Sounds the same as it was when I was there in the late 90's. Can't say I worried about it too much. Class cancelled? Cool, let's shoot pool at the student union.

What's with the babying going on everywhere?
It’s ridiculous

In my case the professor said, no class today, I’m sick. Yet she was at the bar the night before and every night
At that point these people need to leave the profession. They’ll always be the ones who strike and demand pay increases and time off.

Crazy this was downvoted. Parents here really like doing everything for spoiled Johnny and Suzy.
Or maybe some of us have made wise financial decisions in life and don’t want our kids starting life out with debt.
My parents made me pay for mine and I can tell you it did me zero favors in life.

This is such a weird take by OP, when I was in college my parents had no idea what was happening, what classes I was in and certainly never once did we discuss whether a professor showed up. What's with the babying going on everywhere?
He said his kid commutes and sometimes the cancellations are last minute. I’m sure his kid is pissed off about wasted time and gas. It’s a real problem at LSU. It’s not like when many of us were there because the instructors didn’t have an easy out with online classes. No one holds them accountable, particularly since Covid.

Probably meant you entered the working world with some drive and independent of your parents.

That is probably the worst part. Not everyone lives on campus or right by. I’d drive an hour to get a text 5 minutes before class that it was canceled. This after walking a half mile from a parking lot I pay $300 to park in

I read the first page and didn’t see anyone really addressing your question, so I will. Yes, this is becoming more and more prevalent post-covid as they have the infrastructure in place to teach fully remotely. It’s not just an LSU thing. It’s anywhere people are not being held accountable to show up for work in person.

Could do all this from home just as easy
Can confirm. I’m currently a senior and do online classes. With the exception of the 101 and 102 stuff I needed to finish, it’s a breeze. I’ve been in the large corporate world for 16 years and it’s fun to see where all these business decisions come from.

Everyone is slowly realizing School (both K-12th & College) is way overpriced. Covid taught me, we could teach our kids at home in half the time or less than what it takes at school and with far less costs.
Online learning or some hybrid is the future.

It's good to be a liberal with tenure, isn't it?
Posted on 9/5/23 at 1:03 pm to lsu13lsu
Yep. All these ppl on here think it’s like back in the day and it’s not. They are also acting like it’s a bad thing parents are so involved yet will be the first to blame parents when schools have issues.
I forgot another time it was my 30th birthday and my wisdom teeth came in. I asked the professor if I could leave to go to my local va clinic to be seen. He told me to finish the class. I ended up leaving and going because I felt so sick. Had emergency surgery and let him know. Well there was a big project due and had to be turned in in-person, so even though I was excused I drove over to turn it in. He asked me why I drove to campus being on narcotics, we almost threw fists right there in that building. Same tenured professor left his wife for a student and had god complex.
But yeah parents don’t worry about what some jackass is doing to your students because it will make them harder

I've never had a professor at LSU who would go to a bar with college kids. That wasn't even a remote possibility.
I also didn't get a liberal arts degree.

They didn’t go to the bar with the students, they went with their friends and colleagues. And yes they do. Students would see them out or the students were bartenders.
Also, I had high school teachers always in a restaurant/bar that I worked at in high school as a cook. Teachers love their sauce & partying.

There's also a rise in credentialism. For $10K you can enroll in bootcamps that can teach nearly everything you need for certain jobs.
Colleges are slowly becoming a thing of the past. People don't want to spend tens of thousands of dollars when there's no guarantee of employment, or if they can access the knowledge for much cheaper.

I don’t think my parents ever knew one single thing about any of my classes in college.

Not a single one of my engineering PHD professors would have ever been to a bar in that scenario. I'm sure a few might go have drinks before, but they sure as shite wouldn't have done it around other students, or until all hours of the night. They were respected adults, not losers.
Nor would any of the catholic high school teachers i had do something like that. If any student from high school saw a teacher at a bar, it probably would have meant a bunch of kids were about to get suspended for drinking.
I'm not saying not a single one doesn't drink. just saying they would never be in a place where they might have to interact with students. Which is no different than myself at this point in my life.

The kid is at LSU. There’s almost no chance he learns anything worthwhile or actually useful for his career in his entire four years of classroom instruction.

Those professors are being paid to work on research at a place like LSU, not click to the next slide on a powerpoint for an intro class. It'll happen less and less the more classes start to matter.
Also, why the hell is you kid texting you so much as a freshman in college...this is more unsettling to me
