Was at a new years eve gathering last night and made a joke that if you see someone in a ULL shirt, they likely went to ULL, and if you see someone in an LSU shirt, they likely went to Walmart.

Obviously this is sarcastic commentary on the high number of LSU fans with no ties to the university other than residency in LA.

Truthfully I made the comment to rile them up, but the response was far more than I had anticipated. They became genuinely angry and defensive....it seems I had touched a nerve?

Is the "Walmart fan" perception something that LSU fans have to deal with often?

I'm an LSU fan and I don't have any ties to LSU or Louisiana.

Were you wearing your Bama hoodie in Lafayette when you said this?

I'd rather be a "Walmart LSU fan" than a gump.

When the frick did this become a requirement? Pick any big time school and the majority of the fans will have no ties to the school.

You sound like a huge douche.

Meanwhile, schools like ULL are so irrelevant that the only fans they have are grads or parents/kids of grads, because no one else gives a shite.

Exactly. Case in point, Miami Hurricanes fans in Louisiana during the early 90's. You'd see Miami stuff everywhere.

All fan bases have trashy fans, but you were invited to the party so……...

I always get ripped for this but I don't understand why some people are so passionate about a school they have no connection to.

For example, if your parents went to LSU and you went to Rhodes, I get that. Otherwise it just doesn't make much sense to me.

I am good example. I did not go to LSU but I grew up watching LSU and going to LSU games with my family so I am a huge LSU fan.

I am also a Michigan fan for no other reason than I remember seeing them on TV all the time as a kid and have always liked them for some reason.

The extent to which the jimmies were rustled. Seriously, you'd think I had just told a bunch of muslims that Muhammed was a pig fricker.

What is confusing to me is the outright refusal to acknowledge that LSU has a high number of fans with no ties to the university. To me this nothing short of a rejection of reality.

It's not too tough to figure out. If you grew up in LA in the 80's or 90's it was either LSU or ND football on TV most Saturdays. Watching the same team and hearing family members cheer for or against them causes you to develop an emotional connection with that team.

Why are there passionate professional sports fans? It is impossible to have any connections with those teams except for where they are located.

Where did you go to school?

Your comment was dumb, but being upset by it is also dumb. Having tons of fans that didn't go to LSU is not a knock on LSU at all. It's actually a compliment.

Sounds like you and your friends are all somewhat stupid.

1. See my post above. That goes for any big time school.

2. Why does it matter?

3. Why do you seem to get off on being a tool?
