And as far as the nice features attracting new students . Do you really believe that?
This.

90%+ of students have no idea what the rec looks like before enrolling.
That number is probably conservative.

Cope is a blowhard, but if I were still a student I'd be kind of pissed about this. That being said, if the students actually voted to self impose the fee increase, why should anyone stop it from happening.
But hey, I recall the students voting against a fee increase for the Union renovations, but that still passed. Last time I checked, the administration is under no obligation to follow SG recommendations or student votes.

By increasing fee bills to help the rec center, you take away from the ability to increase fee bills to help the school in general.
No that's not correct. The institution can raise tuition however they like. This was voted on and accepted and paid for by the students. Faculty can also use it although they haven't paid a dime into it. Hes entitled to his opinion and can say what he likes but it doesn't touch the money appropriated for education. If he cares so much maybe he can put a petition together to lower faculty salaries and then that money could be put into improving the education. Didn't think so. Stop bitching.

While that would be pretty cool, I think LSU decided it was a throw away building because of the cost of renovation. The pool there isn't big enough to hold more than a hundred people at a time

I guess if knowing what words mean is retarded, then yes.

No, it fits perfectly fine. The teacher is trying to create controversy about 2 things that have zero to do with each other.
They don't have zero to do with each other in my mind. It looks comical to fund a lazy river with the current situation at the school. There is nothing dishonest about that opinion. The money could be coming form a "Lazy River Fund" and it would still look ridiculous.

If LSU doesn't want to fall further behind on budgetary needs, they have to continually attract students. They are far from the only ones doing it.
18-year-old kids, which is the large majority of students enrolling in universities, love this stuff. And it isn't garish like some things are, it's LSU in the geaux font. I could think of a lot worse.

What should they spend the money from rec fees on, teacher salaries?

Why not use it to renovate the old Huey Long pool and building?

But if the fee bill is already let's say $500 higher, than it's harder to increase everyone's tuition by $500. People may have voted for that increase, but it makes it harder to add any additional increases (such as tuition that would directly help the university). Just because you voted to add that money, doesn't mean it's magically easier for all students to come up with that money. Every time you raise the price tag, you knock out a percentage of students that can no longer afford the bill. And we are doing this for a freaking lazy river?

Holy shite, I hadn't read this far to realize I was conversing with a moron.

Have you seen the UREC Expansion plans?
Looks pretty nice. The construction area is huge

The entire outdoor pool area, the lazy river or the fact that it's shaped like LSU?
They were always going to have an outdoor pool area and I'm pretty sure the river was always a part of the design. The shape of LSU just happened to fit.

I'm just shocked that it is going to have a diving board...

257,177 sq. ft. Student Rec Center
Approx. 1/3 mile indoor jogging trail with inclined slope
40,431 sq. ft. cardio/weight space
8 multi-purpose courts
Renovation of Student Recreation Center Locker Rooms
Outdoor Adventure Center
High low ropes course across from UREC SRC
Fitness Assessment Center
Leisure pool in the shape of LSU
9 new tennis courts (opened Fall 2014)
Addition of 300+ parking spaces at Student Recreation Complex (opened Fall 2014)[/quote]
That is what the $$ is being spent on. That is what was voted on. People are bitching about a drop in the bucket for something that has to do with student living
This is not a budget cut issue

They do not show you the rec. It is not a selling feature.
You think that, perhaps, that might change once they do the upgrades? Obviously the goal should always be to get a degree, but if a school has a nice area to relax and have fun, you don't think that it might help in convincing an 18-year-old to go there?

He just thinks the idea is dumb.
A ropes course is also stupid.

I think that's pretty tacky and a waste of money

Even if the funding was separate, if you've ever owned a pool then you know there are significant costs to maintaining it.
Who foots the bill when pumps break down, when it needs to be cleaned seasonally, or when it's time for resurfacing?

seems like i remember some Dekes running for SGA prez on the platform of disbanding the SGA and using the $100K annual funding to purchase a yacht for all students, to be docked on the LSU Lakes.
They got a good number of votes, but not enough.
