re: LSU CATS hold—How strict are they with 2 in a row? My son…

He needs to see an adviser and not take a no until it comes direct from the dean but the business college is ridiculously strict. They are quick to kick kids out when they are not on schedule.
A lot of holds are just to get the kids attention and are easily handled by the advisor, but some advisors SUCK and some are good... he should have figured out which ones are good by now....

OP needs to attribute/reference user names when passing along the specific advice to his son. Because that will make the conversation funnier in my head to visualize:
"The poster ArmsDealer suggested that you confront the Dean and don't take no for an answer."

Taking hard class over the summer is tough. Better to spread it out if you can. I took Electronics II with Ajmera one summer and damn, there just didn’t didn’t seem like enough time to get it all in. Got a B with a 61 average.

Calling to persuade the college that your kid needs special treatment is Exhibit A what is wrong with everything.
As someone who works with college students, the LAST person I want to hear from is a pushy parent. I give my students the respect of treating them like adults and expect them to behave as such.
Don't want Mom/Dad calling me or showing up to a meeting to try to speak for their son/daughter. If there is a question/concern, I want to hear from the student. Obviously,if the student is in a crisis it's different, but just talking generally.
At my last job, I had a (well-meaning) parent try to coerce me into getting his son into the classes he wanted even though they were full, and it was a miserable, uncomfortable meeting.

I never understood how this could be an issue. It’s soooooo easy to figure out what classes you need to graduate. When I was at lsu there was a flow chart, an online system (can’t remember name) that made it even easier than the flow chart, and a counselor. It’s not hard at all
I went to college before the internet and was able to figure it out, and I was stoned pretty much 24/7 back then.
Sounds like this kid isn’t being honest with pops if he hasn’t even taken the prerequisites for business school admittance.

Well past time for the excuse of not scheduling a certain group of classes together. Just get it done, son of OP

If he got a D in business calc he is probably not cut out for it. I mean that as kindly as it can be said. It’s already watered down from what the engineering and math majors are taking and you have labs during the week to do your homework and ask questions (at least that was the case 12 years ago when I took it). Econ 2010 is an easy course as well. He needs to get his shite together or save himself and you a lot of time and money and take a different path.

It sounds like your kid is lying to you. Make them show you their current transcript and a sheet showing the required classes for their major…do this before spending another dime.

But almost all have the ability to override and get you in the class you need to be in

Some advisors suck for sure, but a much smaller percentage than you would think. I think a lot of the time it's just disgruntled students taking their anger out on their advisors when the advisor tells the student something that he/she doesn't want to hear (i.e. you haven't done the pre-req, so you can't take the class).
Also, a lot of the times, advisors are just messengers for whatever idiotic policies the upper administrators has decided on.

You should definitely update this down the road.

Take him out to a plant. Show him around and tell him he better find a way to take and pass those classes, otherwise this is where he’ll end up at.

In all honesty, as a fairly young person, if he is a senior in college tell him to grow the frick up and figure it out. Get your hands out of it.
He doesn’t want to take business calc (incredibly easy), accounting, econ and finance? I don’t want to pay 11 bills a month and work on 12 projects this week to get my paycheck, but I will and I do.
I repeat, Time for him to grow the frick up

Your son is smoking too much weed and obviously doesn’t want to follow the career path you have chosen for him. This has the makings of an Adam Sandler movie.

not to derail, but this talk of a parent contacting a professor or dean or whomever reminded me of my undergraduate days;
i went to a small private college; signed up for some bs elective; somehow missed that the damned class was 8 a.m.; first day of class, professor says we get one unexcused absence for the semester, then points start going away;
knowing me the way i did, i dropped the class;
get this ...
the professor got my mom's telephone number from someone in administration, called her and told her i needed to take that course; why? i have no idea; she didn't know me from adam;
anyway, after mom called me, i was enrolled in the course again;

Biz Calc is baby calc. Shouldn’t be an issue with Macro (ECON 2010) and whatever intro or intermediate ACCT/FIN courses.
If he can’t pass that class, he might not be college material, much less B-school material.

This. My parents could not tell you a class I was taking let alone my major most of the time during my college years. Now days, college kids are basically 5th graders. Mind blowing.

They call it a cats hold because the kids that get those grow up to ride the cats bus
