Low Tech Solutions to Complex Problems...

So, if you take a flight from Managua to the Corn Islands (beautiful place to get a diving certification for cheap). You will board a small dozen or so seater plane. You will walk across the tarmac to board the plane and hanging from the tail of the plane will be a stick.
If that stick touches the ground, the plane doesn't take off. It's overweight. They will then toss a fat person off the plane or force people to leave their luggage behind.
It works.
I'm always amazed when people come up with very simple solutions to what could be viewed as complex problem requiring a calculator or an expensive tool.
Got any good ones?

They can't get a scale and a calculator on Corn Island?

Williston, ND does something similar - if it is a full flight, they will only fuel the jet to get to Bismarck, and then refuel and continue to Denver.
if it is a full flight, they will board everyone and then asses things - and if need be, get volunteers to deplane and then will depart.
the runway in Williston doesn't have a lot of room at either end of the runway for mistakes - Walmart at one end and apartments at the other

That stick doesn't directly tell you whether the plane is overweight or not, it gives an indication of the weight distribution fore and aft of the pivot.

They do have a scale, it's a stick on a the back of the plane.

Shadows are suspect, pic is suspect.

That’s funny, but the tail stand is there because they load bags first, and in this plane the bags go in the rear and with no people the plane would sit on its tail

You do realize that's false? The russians didn't use a pencil.
Shards of graphite floating around in zero G is bad news.

I heard it was false but there’s probably some truth to how the two countries approach problems differently.

Used to have one of those at the camp. A lot of truth on there. Always thought there should be something on there about “headache, go back to sleep”.

Seems like that would require a Russian pencil sharpener.
And don’t get me started on those Russian erasers.
