Louisiana's highways don't have a litter problem. They have a maintenance problem.

At least we don't have any worse of a litter problem than our neighbors*. We do have litter.

But next time you drive through any of Louisiana's cities or along it's major highways.....notice the type of debris you see in the curb or along the side of the lanes. Most of it will be the broken down substrate used in the neglected asphalt pavement, with a mix of bio debris (grass clippings, etc.) and shredded truck tire (which counts as litter but is exacerbated by the lack of pavement maintenance.

I don't think Baton Rouge even uses a street sweeper. They probably don't even own one.

The mattresses, shopping carts, sofas, and garbage bags full of crap under every overpass says otherwise.

Ive seen them used in parking lots.

But thats because whoever owns that property charges its tenants to keep up the grounds.

Trust me, Baton Rouge uses plenty of "street sweepers".

LA has a litter problem. My quick fix is get bus loads of prisoners to pick up trash along side of our interstates and highways.

That path from the airport to LSU is disgraceful. The weeds along the highway along with debris is a joke. Such low hanging fruit but no politician wants to demand we have a clean capital.

The weeds

This never gets talked about, but I think this is the worst part. You can pick up all of the litter and 5 minutes later more could be there. The weeds and general disrepair really showcases the neglect, and I'm not talking about the pavement.

The interstate bridges on 220 in Shreveport look like an open-air flea market.

As a Mississippian, I can say, unequivocally, that,
quote:

we don't have any worse of a litter problem than our neighbors
is unmitigated bullshite. By no means are Mississippians not litterbugs, but holy hell yall take the cake.

The trash along Louisiana highways is absolutely appalling. I honestly cannot believe that you all put up with it.

We can't buy a little weed killer? I don't understand why such little effort is put to maintaining the highways and streets we have. We pay a lot of taxes for garbage from LADOTD.

Not even talking about building new bridges (we need that too), but just keeping the reflectors and stripes painted on a highly deteriorated road surface is just too much for LADOTD to handle.

Agreed. Among gulf coast states, Louisiana is easily the worst when it comes to litter. It’s not close, and I question the motive of anyone who claims otherwise.
