This, I really hope he has a twin engine plane, not a single like the picture.
Crossing all that water on one engine is crazy.
The flight plan from Nola to Cozumel is straight south if you have multi engine.
With single engine the recommended path is along Florida, then near Cuba, then cross to eliminate long stretches away from land.
I couldn't imagine going from Midway to Hawaii to California on one engine.

Nice video with the young man talking about why he's doing this. Also, nice plane, and he shows the flight path he will take.

Hawaii to California on one engine.
Cant be done safely...absolutely not with that plane hes using. It's basically 4 hrs via commercial plane doing in excess of 400 mph.
Doing 300mph or less would need 7+ hrs of fuel. I'm no expert, but I cannot imagine that plane having that airtime on 1 tank

They add a auxiliary fuel tank in the rear cabin to achieve the needed flying range. Hawaii to California has been flown thousands of times in single engine planes, it might be considered a higher risk because the longer time in the air requires that everything work correctly for a longer period of time and if you consider setting down in the water worse than making an emergency landing on land, but it is not really un-safe. There are also a lot of single engine planes flown from Australia to the U.S.

The only way to become a pilot, especially that young...
This is the definition of White privilege.
But seriously hope this journey is a successful one. That is an amazing accomplishment at such a young age... but still $$$$

Sure i am. Anyone would. Love to have them pay for my piloting license.
Most parents can't make such an investment as that one, so im sure im not in the minority of "parents who have made bad choices"
