Pretty good cost of living north of I-10 and 12 where insurance isn’t as big a pain. Good access to healthcare in most areas. Amazing food. Warm weather year around. Close to beaches. A dream come true for hunters and fishermen. Flat. No ice to slip on. Pretty normal crime rates outside of a couple of urban cores.

I'd say you could do a lot worse. Maybe not the best place for young families with kids who need decent schools. But the list of drawbacks for older folks is smaller.

Cali, New York and Wisconsin are the 3 that should top this list.

You're the one making the dumbass claim. How about you show your proof? I lived in Texas 15 years and paid a lot of property taxes in my time there. As did all my friends. I have kids that live there now. And your claim is utter bullshite.

When you turn 65, you not only get an increased homestead exemption, you also get your taxable value frozen until both you and your spouse die

Just say you dont what you’re talking about

And you probably lived in Houston which has some of the highest rates in the state with the MUDS, which is why I said most jurisdictions

New Hampshire is apparently the best part of New England, but I still wouldn’t want to live up there unless the south was like Brazil or South Africa levels of bad…

According to Zillow, this house for sale in a town in Texas that is a bit less than $400k has monthly property taxes a hair under $400. That’s almost $5000 a year.

Well that’s not right for anyone, but certainly not a senior over 65. Just the homestead exemption would get the property taxes to approximately $2,800 on that

Florida at 10 completely invalidates this list.

So with that in mind…Louisiana moves up a bit higher than 50th for me.

I got 2 questions. How much does a tube of crickets cost and are they readily available? They are expensive here and hard to get at times...which makes Georgia almost intolerable....a man never knows when he is going to need a tube of crickets on short notice.

Unfortunately Louisiana has ranked at or near the bottom of most of these type lists for a long time. Louisiana is home, my family are here and it’s a fine place for me to retire. But I sure as hell would prefer a cooler climate.

Get a small place to spend the hottest months in that has a better climate. You'll be retired, why hang around one place? Central New Mexico ain't too far a drive...it can be incredible nice around Ruidoso in the summer...even with all the Texan heat refugees....

I'm telling you guys, retire to Western Kentucky. Beautiful scenery and affordable.

I am building our retirement home here locally on the lake but we are going to look at a 4 acre lot in south eastern NC in 2 weeks and if it is as flat as it looks on a topo map we will be building there as well to have a place to spend most of the summer. Neither place will be palatial but who needs palatial when you are retired????

Louisiana is a bottom 5 in just about everything. But the food. The food.

There is also the people and the outdoor opportunities. The people are about as friendly, in my experience, as you could ask them to be and the hunting and fishing is above average, in my opinion. The summers would be my only concern....that period between the end of January and the beginning of December LOL...

That’s a weird list, and I bet it is bullshite on some very important way, but I don’t care to prove that.

Oh, that’s good re Texas. Didn’t know that, but see people say how high property tax is. Re MS, just depends. My home will be paid for and retirement is a few years away. And do I want to move an hour away from kids and grandkids when aging. Stuff to think about.

There are 4 states with lower property taxes than Louisiana and a few that are equal. The rest of the country is higher; significantly so, for retired people on smaller fixed income.

This AI list doesn’t factor in the higher cost of living at many states it ranks above La.

By percentage it’s like less than a tenth of a percent. Property taxes just aren’t that big of a factor, especially if you downsize in retirement. You’re literally talking like $200-$500 difference a year.

And I just looked at that article and the numbers aren’t even right
