AntonioMoss’ suggestion that the legislature play a game of chicken with the governor to pressure him to go to phase one is maybe the worst idea of all if we are looking at it politically. It means that the GOP members must think that phases are the right approach and there’s some benefit to them. Yet they’re willing to open things up completely. That looks way more politically driven than simply taking the only step they can take to open up the economy and allowing people to go back to work.

Whereas if they just have the vote with no political games, then the narrative is that they did the only thing they could do that allows people to go back to work since the curve has been flattened (and beyond) and the governor lied.

Do they know he is simply using the White House guidelines? It's two more weeks. Geez. No one is paying attention to it any way

If they are really serious then the ones leading the charge should get on the phone with JBE and tell him to rescind the order and issue real guidelines or they are going to wipe it all away and make him look like a powerless slug.

Radio interview was step one of that IMO. They are putting the squeeze on John Bel. If it doesn’t work I hope they have the intestinal fortitude to stick to their guns.

No he’s not. If going by state totals, we’ve been ready for phase one. But he used regions and then lied about two of them claiming their cases and hospitalizations were increasing when the data proves they are not.

So even if he didn’t ignore the data, he used a regional approach to make a statewide decision. But again, the data suggests, even at the regional level, that we are ready for phase one.

This is all about the extra 150 million he gets.

Title should read:

Louisiana Legislators always looking for a chance to grandstand but not actually accomplish anything meaningful.

That’s why you also try to negotiate with JBE beforehand. Individual members don’t want to have to go on record either way. Tell him you have the numbers and negotiate for two days and make him force your hand.

That's what would make it so great.

But no doubt they'll try to force his hand first (I think).

There’s a lot more to that clip and it’s great. Either house of the legislature can basically veto the emergency declaration and put a stopgap on new regulations for 60 days. All the reps would need us 53 votes. Could be done as early as this week.

Will they have enough of them to conduct a vote? The black caucus said they are not going back to session until the 15th

It's not a bill, its not a vote. It's signing a petition.

Can we talk about the low peak for region eight even though it’s one of the more densely populated regions?

THIS is what stay at home does. It lengthens the curve causing officials to feel the need to continue a lockdown. Forget that the region never had more than a 50 average which is lower than 6 other regions all except one of which have higher population densities.

The Nola spike and fall is exactly what happens without stay at home as this region had widespread transmission prior to any lockdown.

It's about money. The longer we are ordered to stay at home, the more pressing our need for federal money. We need that money to fill the fiscal hole the state is in. Are these Republicans willing to raise sales and/or income taxes to do it? This state likes to talk big about budget cuts, but don't dare cut TOPs or stop giving money to the Saints, etc.

Antonio seems to be so afraid of some extra cases after an opening of the state that he’s willing to sacrifice the economy for another two weeks.

I think you are misunderstanding him. This can happen 3 ways:

1) Stay in JBE’s full shutdown for at least 2 more weeks.
2) La legislature rescinds the Emergency Order and things open 100%
3) Use the threat of this vote to force JBE to begin opening things up at a Phase I or II level

Politics aside, option 3 is probably the more prudent course and gives businesses time to decide how they choose to conduct business and put those protocols in place. I believe it’s past time to begin the reopen but I’m not ready to support a full open including festivals, packed Bourbon Street or anything else that can cause a quick spike like Mardi Gras because that will cause a backlash that shuts things down completely again.
