Causeway cops still make better than a dozen stops per hour on the HP Long bridge in each direction.

Hmm, like that’s on them then.

So less people going to court because of covid and weather disasters should mean less hours for public defenders no?

Or maybe, just maybe, they should take a fricking pay cut.

You have the right to an attorney, even if you're retarded.

they rolled in a dozen tow trucks and vans full of meter maids. You do know NOPD and the meter maids are 2 totally separate departments within the city, right? And NOPD has zero control over the meter maids?

I grew up in midcity and never saw a meter maid for Endymion, and the only cars that were towed were on orleans, and they were towed before the trouble truck drove through

District Attorneys have found a loophole in the system.

Most people opt for diversion programs or traffic school so they can keep the ticket off their driving record.

People still have to pay a fee, but that fee goes straight to the DA’s office. It doesn’t go to the CUF fund to be allocated to other departments and agencies.

It’s a cleverly disguised bribe. The public thinks they are paying a fine and opting to jump through a few hoops to keep the ticket off their record, but the DA’s office is pocketing that money and dismissing the charges.

NOPD traffic division responds to accidents. The days of traffic enforcement in NOLA are over. It's not a good thing, particularly if you've driven on the interstate lately, esp. With LSP troop B being down 30 troopers.

I10 is like wild west. 610...wild west would be too kind.

You do realize they’re both city organizations, right?

It was organized activity, every year. Parade starts, and tow trucks and vans came up Dumaine to Carrollton and dispersed from there. Straight fund raising.

Am I dreaming it up, or wasn't there a law passed on % revenue for municipalities from tickets. Meant to end cities like Woodworth and Port Vincent.

The legislature tried but it didn’t pass.

They DID pass a law in 2009 that sends any ticket revenue for speeding <10 mph over the limit on interstates to the state, rather than the local municipality. So local PD’s don’t keep speeding ticket revenue for violations on the interstate unless it’s >10 mph over the limit.

I’m guessing that the “speed trap” towns probably aren’t really the focus of the article, though. It’s the bigger cities that have just stopped enforcing traffic laws. I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw someone pulled over by BRPD, at least before midnight or so when they start busting folks for DUI. Driving around town during the day lately is like a free for all with zero consequences unless you get in a wreck.

I guess they have never been to Westwego, Gretna or St. Charles Parish.

Public defenders don't represent people unless they are exposed to a "loss of liberty", which doesn't apply to traffic violations. A reduction in the number of traffic citations has zero impact on the average public defender's caseload, but it does significantly reduce public defense funding.

So Rémy is complaining that the state LE is not writing enough to tickets to fund the public defender office so that his office can in turn defend the people that are getting ticketed? I'm confused.

We need more people in trouble so that we can fund defending the same people getting in trouble?? I realize the likelihood of a public defender defending traffic citations would be rare but my point remains the same.

Your point doesn't remain the same, for the reason you stated in your post: public defenders don't represent people in traffic matters. He didn't say that police need to arrest people for more DWIs

St. Landry and Evangeline parishes haven't. I've gotten 3 tickets since moving back in 2017 from Dallas, all of them in St. Landry parish. I am about to sell all the property I own there so I can stop having a reason to drive there.
