When the idiot governor continues to try and shut down the state, less people are on the roads leading to less tickets.

This completely surprises me. I didn’t realize it until I moved out of state, but Louisiana has far more speed traps than any state I have ever lived in. I can’t think of a single small town speed trap in Mississippi, but basically every small town in Louisiana has one.

This seems to kill the argument many of you like to regurgitate that law enforcement is too focused on generating revenue through traffic tickets to catch real criminals.

Waze has killed their hiding spots.

You apparently have not been to St. Tammany around Hwy 59 and the Greenleaves area. I see tickets being given out every evening on Greenleaves just off of 190. Business has been brisk this holiday season.

rish. I am about to sell all the property I own there so I can stop having a reason to drive there.

Rather dramatic measure, but considering you lived in Texas I understand. Every vehicle I encounter on I-10 with Texas plates is driving way over the speed limit and they are aggressive and rude about it. Just lawbreakers.

I am sure the budget hasn't been reduced and they have just found other ways to get the money.

It just cost me almost a thousand dollars to get a double axle trailer registered/plated. Taxes were the bulk of that. I bought it out of state too, thank goodness those people were able to avoid charging me taxes, because Louisiana would have charged these same taxes anyways. I'd rather we go back to more tickets and drop some of these bullshite taxes.

District Attorneys have found a loophole in the system.

Most people opt for diversion programs or traffic school so they can keep the ticket off their driving record.

People still have to pay a fee, but that fee goes straight to the DA’s office. It doesn’t go to the CUF fund to be allocated to other departments and agencies.

It’s a cleverly disguised bribe. The public thinks they are paying a fine and opting to jump through a few hoops to keep the ticket off their record, but the DA’s office is pocketing that money and dismissing the charges.

Great post. This is exactly what’s happening.

I wonder how much of the decline can be attributed to the cable barriers on the Interstates. You rarely see a Trooper initiating a traffic stop from the opposite direction anymore. Seeing those blue lights come on and them enter the median was a sure heart dropper back in the day.

Not really, they were all for minor issues like going less than 10 above the speed limit, broken lights, or one where they said I didn't come to a complete stop eventhough I did. They do it because it's an economically unproductive parish (mostly their fault) and it's a money grab. Most Texas police departments usually focus on things like violent crimes (hence why their crime rates are generally lower). St Landry has lost put on a lot of economic development opportunities because of this.

The biggest difference is the passage in 2009 of a law championed by Jindal and Republicans to take a bite out of small town speed traps…basically any tickets written for speed violation under 10 mph DOES NOT go to the entity writing ticket but to the state…

That would explain why I’ve blown by then at 80 multiple times and haven’t been pulled over.

That is because they raised the speed limit in Ball, La.
