Louisiana lab chimpanzees enjoy luxurious Georgia retirement.

The golden years of these 220 chimps will be spent at a sanctuary built in Northern Georgia, designed to cater to every wish these apes could have. Amenities include oodles of enrichment toys, large open outdoor spaces filled with rolling hills to roam, a kitchen designed by Rachael Ray, a full veterinary clinic, breakfast smoothies and more.
The sanctuary has scheduled the chimps to arrive in social group transfers from the NIRC of about ten at a time, and welcomed the first group this week. The primates stepped off the trucks into their new home, staffed with animal lovers dedicated to providing them with the most satisfying life possible. While the facility was created for the primates from the NIRC, it was built to house roughly 300 chimps, so future retired animals looking for a home won’t be turned away.

But now that they're not working they'll have no purpose in life and die in a few years. Getting poked with needles gave them a sense of purpose.

I thought Tulane was the only place to have a primate center. Does LSU have one also?

My dad used to work at that place in the early 80s
He told me a story about how the janitor forgot to lock up one of the rooms and the researchers let the chimps into the room and they escaped
He said a chimp was literally chasing him down a hallway and he was fumbling with his keys to get through a door and lock it behind him

Tulane has one off of 3 Rivers Rd in Covington. Been there since my uncle was a kid, and he's 55

LSU doesn't have a primate center, but they do have primates in the LSUHSC. Most of them of rhesus monkeys. I work with a group of them doing AIDS research

A few people I know on the northshore have seen a few that have escaped from the Tulane center.

Didn't that Dr Mary's Monkeys lady live in New Orleans? I haven't read the book, so no idea if it is actually about New Orleans or monkeys
