Little man woke up at 3 am Monday with a fever, had him at the doctor with a positive test by 10 (It is running rampant at his school and I've heard you have to catch it early for the meds to be effective so I wanted to rule it out). Doctor prescribed Xofluza and I had to call all over town before finally finding it at Costco.
Blue Cross denied it, because frick yo kid.
It was listed at $263, paid $108 cash after coupon the doctor gave me because the insurance companies are bitches.

It's a single dose med, gave it to him at 4pm Monday because that was as quick as I could get it. Monday really sucked for him. Woke up a few times during the night, finally got the fever to break around 7 am Tuesday. He's currently in the living room watching Minions. It's like he wasn't even sick. I don't know if it was because he had the flu shot, or the medicine, or the strain was just mild.
But damn, I'm counting my blessings. I've only had the flu twice, and it really sucked both times. The last time I think the Tamiflu messed me up more than the actual flu. Xofluza was worth every penny, and when he goes back to school tomorrow and I go back to work I'll be letting my HR and Blue Cross hear exactly what I think about the insurance policy I pay $500 a month (my portion) for and how useless it is when I actually need it. I know it won't do any good, but it may make me feel a little better.

Tamiflu is the antiviral medication for influenza that most insurances pay for. It is like $30 on GoodRx compared to > $100 for Xofluza. Xofluza is easy to take and works better but your doctor should have known that the insurance would not cover it and given you a heads up.

The doctor did, and also recommended Xofluza for the reasons you stated. Easy to take, works better, one pill one time vs twice a day for 5 days. She did give me a coupon for it to help with the cost, and it was well worth the $70 difference.
I just think it's crappy that you have a medication that is easier to take, works better, and is recommended by physicians that are practicing and seeing this in their office every day, but let's make a 5 year old take 10 pills instead, drag it out and destroy their stomach. I mean at the end of the day, I'm going to end up eating 50% of the cost up to $50 anyway. They either pay $30 for Tamiflu or $58 for Xofluza. I think it's stupid that $28 is worth more to them than a doctor recommendation.
I do understand though that this is the way the system is, and nothing I can say or do will change it. I'm aware it was my choice to pay for Xofluza, and I'd do it again. I just think it's dumb that it comes to that.

Well I’d take coughing up a lung or two over two kids with the flu at the same time as me any day. We’re almost over it now but it’s been a long month and a half. On top of that, my four year old had a bad case of tonsillitis last week and wouldn’t eat a thing for 8 days.

I’ve aged three years since the start of November!

definitely good to avoid the general public with infants during cold/flu season. Once older, she’ll get a chance to build her immune system through daycare. then she’ll be sick for what seems like a consecutive 6 straight months.

I'm just getting over the flu, it kicked my butt for about a day. The new flu med, Xofluza, seems to have worked well. Symptoms never worsened, started feeling better about 24 hours after taking it and felt about 90% at 48 hours.

Might be a good idea to try some zinc + zinc ionophores (like quercetin or EGCG) at first exposure or symptoms.

Grok explains:
quote:

Research has shown that zinc, when combined with zinc ionophores, can inhibit the replication of RNA viruses by increasing intracellular zinc levels, which interferes with viral RNA polymerase activity. This has been demonstrated in various in vitro studies for viruses like SARS-CoV and influenza. However, despite these promising findings, conducting clinical trials with these substances is unlikely due to the lack of patent potential; since zinc and many ionophores are natural or generic compounds, there's little financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to invest in the costly process of clinical trials, thus limiting the translation of this research into practical, approved treatments.

You don’t know you have the flu unless you get tested for the flu. Lol

you’ve never had the flu?

that’s quite the tall tale to tell just for attention on an internet forum board.

I'm a doctor and I would take the Tamiflu. I can't say the Xofluza works better. Tough to say for sure as most willing to pay for it are younger, healthier and have the money to pay extra. Those tend to do well anyway.

That's assuming you do the full course of the Tamiflu. Costs can really ramp up if you are treating a family instead of a single individual.

And I 100% recommend the zinc, vitamin C and quercitin. Don't forget vitamin D.
