Just trying to figure out if we should head out of town Sat or stick around to gaurd against frozen pipes. Not getting above freezing for highs is concerning

I'll ask the only important question, what does this mean for nola?

Doesn't matter how bad someone wants winter weather, no one wants the CMC to play out (which is very unlikely).

Dallas roads would be a death trap. I want to get to the store to stock up before the forecast gets out to the public. I probably won’t be able to get down my driveway slope without sliding into the neighbors fence on the other side of the alley.

I found a pretty good instructional video for you.

Last major ice storm years ago we had more than 3” of ice built up in the driveway. My son had a temp of 104° and emergency crews were tied up with all the accidents. In desperation, I poured kitty litter all the way down my driveway to get enough traction. It worked but it turned to pure cement when the ice melted 2 days later.

I hope everyone in this thread realizes how notoriously difficult these winter weather forecasts are to make. You think hurricanes are hard, they have nothing on these forecasts. I wouldn't mind the cold, but I don't want the damn ice. To hell with that. It'll probably be a high of 50.

I can only remember one relative that ever had burst pipes from an arctic outbreak and they were absolutely miserable. I hope people take pipe wrapping seriously if the temps get that low. It's gonna be a nightmare for people.

I've only ever known one person to have pipes burst, and it was my grandparents when they lived in Ohio. It can certainly happen, and probably does very often up north, but I think it's still a pretty rare occurrence in the south.

If you're really concerned about it, wrap your outdoor spigots with a towel and rubber bands, open the cabinets under your kitchen and bathroom sinks, and leave a couple of faucets slowly running. The last one is hard to do if you're going to be out town, but do the other two and leave your thermostat warmer and pray the power doesn't go out.

If the concern is just freezing overnight could you just turn off the water to the house and drain all of the pipes?

Protip: figure all that stuff ahead of time. The last time I had to do that I discovered the valve had silted up and I had to dig it out.

Then just turn off your water supply and open up all the faucets before you leave town....Will take like 5 minutes max and will prevent any chance of busted pipes

I feel bad for praying for this cold front to come through. Really needed something to be cancelled this weekend and rescheduled but any ice in Dallas is a catastrophe. Local forecast now predicting 20s on Friday & Saturday and teens on Sunday. Any precipitation with that is major. I’ll spend the weekend watching idiots slide down the High Five all day and dodging the ones who didn’t make it up the ramp. Good time to stock up on wine.
