He wants out but will not say anything to my Dad & Uncle
He said he asked to go in & he has to stay will it, it’s too much trouble...
He said when he went in he never thought he would still be here
It’s hard to hear but he’s 94 & he’s lived his life
When things are normal he is fine, when things are like they are now he gets down & starts telling us he’s ready to go
I worry if he’s not at least allowed to get up & walk & talk to us that he will get depressed & give up
If he does get tested & is positive I’m thinking we can get a cheap prepaid cell phone & drop off to him
They will just have to show him how to use it

I quickly estimated from the bar graph for ICU beds to be around 2,100 so Ill guess thats what he was referencing.
We have less than 1000 people in the hospital with 5600 total beds available, of which 2100 are ICU beds. The hospitals are surely doing well as far as capacity currently.

All the displacing of residents and swapping rooms is to create legit iso units with dedicated staff, clean-room, and separate entrance. I know the stigma right now is that LTC facilities have no clue what they’re doing, but sometimes you should trust the professionals. I hope this isn’t indicative of what the next two weeks looks like here as we’ve just started notifying families and residents of impending non-mandatory (but really mandatory) testing.

Amos we had a family member of a resident who died compliment our staff for advanced actions and daily phone calls about his condition. I started to share a piece of his post but decided not to. Although I'm working from home, his comments verified what I have known -- that our staff did indeed do 100% what they could and provided the care that they always have with love and dignity.
Our iso unit was I think 12 or 14 rooms which normally have 2 people but they put of course only 1 per room. Then they started shifting other residents to make another iso wing. At some point, that one got full and then there was no real point in an iso unit as it was throughout the facility.
I do try to see it from a family members eyes ... and I'm sure that some families try to see it from a staff perspective. I've got a 98 yo grandmother in a facility near my parents. I've tried since her admit to keep my parents calm with things that happen and that no place is perfect and that their ideal isn't always practical. BUT I've also been able to tell them "no that's not acceptable .. do xyz to get a handle on it".
It's very hard and heart breaking for both sides.

Parish where I work has 359 cases total ... 163 are from nursing homes (45%). Deaths there are 35 with 28 of them from nursing homes (80%).

I told my parents we need to do something nice for them

Sweet idea .. and I promise you that kind words will mean so much on their own.
That's a big home .. we have 100 beds and 47 empty at the moment. We've been cleared for admits but I have no idea if families will want to admit their family members. Time will tell.
Keep us posted on your grandfather and seriously, if you have questions or concerns, it's their job to talk to you. Don't hesitate to contact them if needed.

You should, absolutely. I can tell you for every one thing you notice them do, there’s probably 10 more you don’t. Most facilities have non-gratuity policies by now, but speaking personally, I’ve kept every handwritten card from residents/families over the years. That’s my vote. You have no idea how much these mean to those that really are in it for the right reasons.

Agreed. While AT&T won’t be permitted inside to transfer a landline, state requires alternative communicative channels for residents/families right now. Our Maintenance Director has been successful with Suddenlink in a front door handoff of equipment and over the phone setup.

I got the 151 from the state report, I think that’s how many they currently have
The # that they can have is closer to 200
We have no problem calling & asking & we know they are doing what they can
They have been great about keeping us updated (except for telling us about deaths)
I appreciate y’alls help, it’s good to get a different perspective

Very glad to hear this.
As an employee, I can tell you some days are super rewarding and some days I get home and tell my husband that I think 12 years of consulting there is enough as it can be so heartbreaking. When my daughter graduates from college in 3 years, my time will for sure be up.
