Have you heard some of the videos of how loud those data centers are?

I’d go clinically insane, if I had to hear that all the time.

But 30% you say?

But all the pols in Louisiana tell me that we have to cancel property taxes for businesses or they will leave.

Think about how hard this may be on the residents who now have to decide how to spend the extra money they get to keep.

They don’t have to think about it, their rising energy costs will gobble it up

No different from the noise of a neighborhood sewage treatment plant. That's why they're building them out in the middle of nowhere now though. The smaller data centers in a business park in the middle of town are the ones that people are complaining about.

Data centers are also exempt from sales taxes for just about everything (which is common in other states too).

I did see that Virginia is adding a electricity tax on data centers.

quote:

Virginia has significantly altered the tax landscape for one of its largest and fastest-growing industries by imposing a new tax on electricity consumed by data center operators. Beginning July 1, 2026, operators are subject to a tax of $0.011 per kilowatt-hour of electricity consumed, with annual collections capped at $600 million. The tax is scheduled to remain in effect through June 30, 2028.

Importantly, Virginia preserved its long-standing sales and use tax exemption for qualifying data center equipment. The compromise allows the Commonwealth to retain one of its principal economic development incentives while generating up to $1.2 billion in additional revenue over the biennium.

So in Virginia, data centers are paying property taxes and will pay the electricity tax (caps at $600m total).

Louisiana politicians will absorb that potential tax cut for it’s residents.

Idk…Richland Parish just gave their teachers a $50k bonus.

Richland Parish teachers say Hold My Beer.

quote:

Teachers in Richland Parish, Louisiana, are receiving massive annual bonuses of up to $50,935 due to a surge in local sales tax revenue generated by the construction of a massive Meta AI data center. Other school support staff in the district are also receiving payouts exceeding $17,000.
