Will work flawlessly. She's a celebrity, no one expects them to know or obey the law.

Hell, I didn’t know it was illegal to write an endowment check to get your kid in.
To a college coach, while pretending your child is a recruited athlete? That's not mens rea, that's full blown diarrhea.

This is outrageous, egregious, preposterous.

Well, most people understand that bribery is a no no.
Depends on where you draw the line. You want season suite tickets at an LSU football game. Will a 500 dollar donation get you the rights to even buy tickets? Nope. Will 5000? Nope. How much of a donation will get you the amount of points you need? Who knows? The people you need to bribe.
Is it bribery to build a library or dorm with the condition of getting your child admitted? frick no. You’re a philanthropist. To do what they did was wrong, but she had someone handle it for her. They have to prove that she not only had knowledge of what he was doing, but that she was ok with it. And they probably won’t be able to prove it. By pleading not guilty, her lawyer doesn’t think so either.

Of course it will. Everyone screaming about the law and intent and all of that haven't been paying attention. She'll end up being the victim and get a movie of the week out of the deal.
Downvote away ya bunch of ostriches

I don't know why anyone is taking up for her. People elected Trump to drain the swamp and that's what happened in this case.
If she looked like Amy Schumer I doubt anyone on this board would be taking up for her.

Her kid got a sports scholarship but didn’t play a sport.
Her defense isn’t ignorance. It is she paid the consultant who did everything, she didn’t know what the consultant was doing. Essentially, the other person did the illegal activity and she just provided the consultants funding to do so. Who knows what the consultant told her or sold her on how he was going to do it. It is actually a pretty good legal strategy but only if it works. Make the jury think it was someone else but your client.

This is a bold strategy, but I think the Chewbacca defense would be the smart move.

No it's not. Or hitmen would be prevalent
They also made payments directly to the coach.

THAT isn't what happened here
and you can deduct those donations, too
there is a lot more past giving money (And who the money was given to) in this case that's going to doom her
she gave money to (1) a completely unaffiliated party who (2) created a scheme to bribe athletic coaches to give non-scholarship slots to her children to slide under normal admissions standards.

she transferred the money and, iirc, participated in creating the fraud of athletic participation

Yep.
“I give you $500,000 and you get her in?”
Yes. And don’t ask how.

and DEDUCTED the money used in the scheme
like i said earlier, even if this "ignorance" scheme works, she's fricked on tax fraud
also, again, the guy who ran this scheme (as well as other parents) already pleaded guilty. do y'all think he's just going to be like "oh yeah the other 40 people knew but lori? naw she was ignorant" ?

My wife is a lawyer. She has clients all the time that think this is a good excuse. Guess what? It’s not.
Posted on 4/25/19 at 7:25 am to SlowFlowPro
I’m not saying she’s smart. Not in the least. I’m sure she’s dumb as frick, there isn’t much question about that. I’m suggesting her ignorance defense is legit...not a technicality. There isn’t much debate that the consultant and the person inside the athletic department are dirty as frick.

i don't buy it, especially when reports came out that she was pissed when the feds filed a superseding indictment against her
she thought it was a bluff. it was not.
that's not the behavior of a person who is ignorant. she avoided the slap on the wrist (that Huffman will get) to gamble

I actually can get behind that. She knew it was wrong/cheating, but may have had no idea it was against the law.
Bring the hate...lol
