The New Orleans City Council punted a decision Thursday on whether to put a new 3-mill tax the Nov. 16 ballot.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell's administration has sought the tax as a way to pay for the ongoing maintenance of city infrastructure projects, a widely recognized need that does not have a dedicated revenue source in the city's budget.

would let some of the funds go toward cybersecurity defenses, furnishings and other items like police cars.

Cantrell's representatives, however, argued for taking into account new needs the city might have, including protecting city computers from cyber attacks.

The Russians coming for Orleans parish?

Is this woman’s objective to push everyone into Jefferson Parish/St. Tammany? Coupled with the re-assessment this is going to put a lot of folks in a financially bad spot. The city hasn’t shown to be responsible for the dollars they are already bringing in, but they want more L O L.

Has anyone ever noticed the amount of wrecked police cars at body shops in the city?

Seems like an incredibly high number, maybe they just stand out.

This bitch is too fricking stupid to realize the assessor is about to rape a lot of citizens with tax hikes.

I assume the non-tax payers will support the tax increase.

Pretty sure the tax office on the first floor of city hall still stores their info in shoe boxes.

"I would push back on the idea that this is a tax increase," said John Pourciau, Cantrell's chief of staff, since the overall millage rate won't increase.

Doesn’t matter for a lot of the citizens, not like they are paying for it. It really shocks me how much people who pay the taxes sit back and allow themselves to be treated as large piggy banks for the municipalities. Parts of Lakeview has some of the worst roads I’ve ever seen, but probably brings in the most revenue besides uptown.

If Nola City Government was shut down due to ransome ware everyone would be screaming "you can take down statues but you can't pay for an IT department." A bunch of school districts in the state got hit with it. Ask the City of Baltimore how much fun they had spending millions to replace their computer system.

That tax has zero chance of passing.

I think we need to re-evaluate the right to vote in municipal elections in regards to home ownership.

They need $10 million + for this? It’s a lot easier to ask for money when a person shows to be a good steward of what they currently have, that’s not applicable here.

Absolutely, never understood why a person who didn’t pay property tax could vote to levy it on someone else.

Da outgoing Riviera Beach mayor wit Da Pres

quote:

RIVIERA BEACH — One month and a $600,000 ransom later, government operations have largely returned to normal after a ransomware attack that paralyzed the city computer system and every department on which it depended.

The system went down May 29, after someone in the police department hooked a "phishing" email infected with coding that encrypted Riviera Beach computers that controlled everything from phones to email, water utility pump stations, employee paychecks, traffic citations and possibly — the city would not disclose it — police investigation documents.

The attack and the size of the payment the city council authorized its insurer to make, drew attention nationwide to Riviera Beach, the latest victim of a plague of such attacks, from state capitals to Florida burgs as small as Palm Springs, Stuart and Lake City.

Riviera Beach, a coastal city of 35,000 struggling to right its reputation after scandals toppled its mayor and four out of five council members, found itself featured again in an unsavory light on CNN, CBS, NPR and newspapers from The New York Times to The Wall Street Journal.

I'm more grateful every year that I did not buy property in the city.

I remain confused on why anyone with the means to live elsewhere would continue to live in New Orleans. Great to visit though.

Some areas are looking at a 90% increase. Averages that I saw on the low side were 20 to 40%.
