A good chunk of Christian religions don't take Adam and Eve as fact. It's also got nothing on stealing alien souls, putting them into dc-8's, dropping them into volcanoes, then blowing up the volcanoes with H-bombs; the souls escaping and entering cavemen, making us all contaminated by Xenu.....

I think they are aware of the abstract possibility of it being dangerous. But at the same time, many of them very optimistically believe that they will be able to take all potentially dangerous components out of it during design (cough, Kurzweil, cough)

There are probably a lot of cognitive biases that are particularly prominent in these folks, most significantly among them being an Optimacy Bias and Pro-Innovation Bias. I’d also guess that some combination of Normalcy Bias, Offerconfidence Effect, Peltzman Effect, Automation Bias and Anthropomorphism would tend to occur.

But really, I think they mostly just want to play god. Most folks in AI had pretty lonely childhoods, often spending more time with gadgets than with people. They subconsciously think that if they can create god, it makes them next to god, and that would elevate their value above all of the other simpletons on the planet who never gave them the time if day.

Barrat’s ‘Our Final Invention’ speaks a bit about the mindset behind many of these AI experts and from a psychology perspective it’s pretty interesting stuff.

Again, many christian religions view the origin story as a parable. Also yes, I believe in god creating the universe over no explanation for how we got here aside from ancient Aliens using 20th century technology...
