Be better at it and move up to sales manager or finance manager

This is probably worse than my first recommendation but I have four good friends who are accountants and they all seem very happy and content with their lives.

If you have sales skills and people skills, which you probably do, get into b2b sales. Heavy equipment like John Deere, forklifts, material handling, etc... Or supplies like Fastenal or Grainger.

Buyers are a lot more rational, they focus either on cost or performance. Colors, sunroofs, wheels etc... are no longer a deal killer.

1st cousin had a degree in accounting but never took CPA exam. He made a good living selling cars for 5 years then started moving up on the finance side. He ended up being the chief financial officer of a holding company which owned a few car dealerships and other businesses. He always told me that the 5 years selling were the requirement for promotion. Give it another year.

If you live near a city: Elevator Repairman. Check it out.

Good pay, always in demand.

I'm not following your math. 50 cars per year equates to just over 4/mo. At that rate, a person should def find a new career and probably not in sales. 10 per month is 120 cars per year. Using your own average front and a 25% commission, that's $75k/yr. That doesn't include any additional spiffs or commissions paid on finance income.

Good advice...outside industrial sells is a great gig...first off it is mostly outside of an office so you run around town talking to folks. The upside is that most likely the products you are selling are needed by the customer and they have little choice but to buy them from you or someone like you. It is a great gig for those capable of doing it right...

If you’re at a luxury dealership and good at selling you can easily make north $100k/yr.
If you work those number of hours and holidays at just about any other sales job, you can make 100K. Imagine working those hours as a realtor. You woiuld make way more than 100K.

Crazy hours is an old school philosophy. The biggest issue with the hours for most people is working Saturdays. Regardless, the salespeople at the dealerships I'm very familiar with all work roughly 45 hour weeks.

has happened.

We all didn't forget the dealers trying to screw people with insane markups and fees during the pandemic.

With mt rant out of the way, what are you looking to do? Stay in sales? Want out of sales altogether? Have a college degree? If so, in what?

How much does the sales person make pushing service plans, extended warranties, tire, window plans ?

I know you're shitting on these plans and/or the folks "pushing" them, but honestly, a couple of those add-ons (tire and extended warranties specifically) have more than paid for themselves for me.

Those are some of the highest profit centers for dealerships. Unless you think hitting curbs is a sport, I'm not sure how anyone gets any value out of those plans.

Salesmen get paid on front gross. Most dealerships pay salesman 25% commission on the front gross. New cars average front gross is around 2500. 25% of that is 625. 625 x 50 is 31,250

Dude, anyone who sells 50 cars in a calendar year wouldn't even survive the entire year before quitting or being let go. They have no business in sales. 10-12 per month is average. Top performers sell double that. Your example is ridiculous.

Just what the police need. Another last resort applicant.

The fact that he would consider law enforcement after leaving an unrelated industry doesn't make him a bad candidate. I have a friend that was previously a pilot, but the schedule was hard on the family, then the economy went to shite in 2007 and he'd work a few months, then get laid off. He wanted the security of steady hours, a steady paycheck, and no traveling. He's been a cop for about 12 years now and is doing well as a detective. Another co-worker was a middle school math teacher, but hated it. He's making quite a name for himself as a financial crimes detective now. Another dude owned an auto body repair shop, but, at 36, decided he wanted to be a cop and is doing quite well also. Just because someone didn't choose this career straight out of college doesn't mean that they can't be good at it.

Nothing in any type of sales. It doesn't matter what you're selling, you're not selling as much of it as you once were. People don't have the money to buy anything.

Common misconception. Sales people only sell the car itself, all of that other stuff is the F&I manager that does your paperwork. At my dealership they don’t even want salespeople to get into all of that extended warranty talk out of fear of giving wrong information and inadvertently screwing over the F&I guys gross.
