Dalmations are not good family dogs. They have odd tempermant and when that Disney Dalmation movie came out, parents bought their kids them. That year a ton of those dogs ended up in shelters. They are not good for families. I have a black GSD. She is 75 pounds and smart as hell (clever as frick). Great with my younger cousin also.

Ummm you dont have a clue what you are talking about. They are great family dogs. We have two young children and 3 boerboels. All 3 are males and 2 are intact. The two who are not fixed sleep together in the laundry room and the other roams the house and we have zero issues. They are highly intelligent and their instincts for protecting their people and property is second to none. We often leave the house unlocked because I assure you short of someone shooting them, nobody is coming in. If we are home...they alert us to a stranger but are in general easy going. I would clasiffy myself as a highly protective parent but i feel totally confident with my kids around my dogs. So I dont know how you can make that statement that they arent good family dogs because it is the farthest thing from the truth. Do some research.

I had a rot/lab mix that was the absolute greatest dog I have had and likely will ever have. Extremely smart, loyal, loving, and the perfect mix of protective and obedient. Not an ounce of aggression for the sake of aggression in him. He was old and in pain when our son came, but would go out of his way to protect and monitor him, best displayed when our great pyredane, who was a big puppy at the time, would get a little too frantic and excited around the baby. A small growl and quick look would stop her in her tracks. He trained her as much as we did.
He learned to sit, shake, roll over, potty train, "speak," and take a treat out of your hand with the delicate touch of a surgeon at the command of "gentle," all by the time he was six months old. I even got him to speak with his inside voice (literally a muted bark or groan).
I miss that dog so much.

Got a drop off that we took in almost 16 years ago. I was just going to put it down way back then. Come to find out that he is one of the best dogs I had ever own. Lab/chow mix. He was a blood donor that saved many other dogs lives over the years in turn he got the best health care for free. For a big dog, he is a laid back dog.

Dalmatian - can be aggressive and unpredictable. My buddies would attack his kid randomly around the house.
German Shepherd - requires some proper training to get full affect. A different buddy sent his off to some dog camp for 6 weeks and when it came back, it would try to attack anyone not a part of the family.
Weimaraner - great dogs. kinda spastic
Rotweiler - try to get a German Rot (I think). They have a slightly different shaped head and are pretty smart.

This. If you really need a certain breed, go for it, but just about everyone I know that got a shelter dig (my family included) loves it more than any other dog.
They usually come fixed, have often gotten out of the puppy stage, and sometimes come house broken. They're also eager to please & are forever grateful to you. It's like buying a certified preowned car.

Check the hips if you go with a GSD.
This. The breed is very prone to hip dysplasia, and it'll break your heart. I know a lot of large breeds are in the danger zone for this, but my family went through 2 of them that got it and I finally said "never again".

Pretty much this. Dalmations and GSDs can require more effort than most people understand and are willing to put forth. If you get a GSD, GIVE IT A JOB. That can be obediance training, agility, something to focus its drive. They can be destructive when bored, but if you can handle thier drive they will be the best dog you could ever ask for.
With respect to hip dysplasia, that is more common in the show bred GSDs. The ones you see with the large slope from front to rear that the the AKC loves so much. If you get one, get one from a working line. They have far fewer hip issues if any at all and likely a more solid temperment as well.

This is probably the cutest thing I have ever seen. And to original....doesn't matter what you get as long as it is a RESCUE!
