A few years back someone posted a study of covering local nola canals and making them parks.
I cannot find anything on this now. It was a decent thread.
Anyone remember the thread or the study?

Probably something BottomlandBrew was involved with if you can search his posts.

Florida Avenue, New Orleans East, Bayou Segnette, Mississippi... the possibilities are endless.

We did a lot of those studies for the GNO Urban Water Plan.

Main Page

Reports

Canal Vocabulary Report - PDF Inventory of all the canals in the area and possible retrofit options.

Canal St. Canal (Metairie) PIlot Project - PDF - SHows options for enhancing or covering Canal St Canal. Edit: It had been a while since I looked at this report. We did not include the covered option in this one. It was done later for Jeff Parish. I'll see if I can't round up the images for that.

40 Arpent Canal Pilot Project PDF - Canal-side park system. Not covered.

A lot of the designs actually looked to make the canals more visible. We explored covering some just to see what those designs could look like.

Edit 2: Found a rendering of it covered.

Yeah. My links are about five years old. As is typical in SELA, Jeff Parish took an eyesore and made it in to a less-functional eyesore. I'm sure someone's brother-in-law got paid, though.

Isn’t that whole Lafitte Greenway the old Basin Canal from back in the Storyville days?

How long ago did it get covered? Relatively recently, I assume. I looked at the satellite images and there's still a trackhoe and 6 lengths of culvert by Lake Ave and some areas are just dirt.

That canal always seemed to have really steep banks to me. Maybe because it was narrower than some of the major canals.

No the Pontchartrain expressway was the basin canal, it's why canal blvd and west end is so wide in lakeview..

The Old Basin canal is the Lafite greenway.

Yeah, I think it was finished at some point in 2017. Could be the walking paths and trees are still coming in a different phase of the project.
