How comfortable do you want your ride. I have been riding a cross bike for the last few year but got tired of leaning over the handle bars.

Just bought a cruiser bike, Electra 7D, that is much more comfortable to ride. It has it’s pedals forward a bit, like the bike in the 4th pic. This limits you to top end speed and it is a different animal if you have hills to climb.

If you want leisurely rides and don’t have hills to climb, this is the bike for you. The only mod I plan on my bike is a seat post that absorbs the shock and maybe same for the front forks.

I have a road bike and a low end Trek mountain bike. To ride around in the situations you are describing I just use the mountain bike. You could always change the tires to more street friendly tires

Following. I'm looking for something very similar to you. Something mostly for exercise and biking on pavement. Have a road bike with the super slim tires and I hate it. Need more support but not full mountain bike.

My wife has the specialized cross trail. I like riding it much better than my rock hopper

I have a Fuji road bike and I hate it too. Almost always use my Trek in the neighborhood. I despise the little skinny tires.

I have a Liv/Giant Rove Disc Lite(obviously you would pick the male equivalent of this bike)

Perfect for riding mostly pavement and the occasional gravel /dirt path. Light enough to go fast when you want.

Trek Crossrip 1
Can't go wrong with the Trek Crossrip series. I have the crossrip 3 and it's an awesome hybrid bicycle.

I have a Giant.

at his price point the brand isn't going to matter that much. it's the type of bike he wants - a mountain bike, a hybrid, or a cruiser

Ya I should have clarified. I have a Giant hybrid that I can use for multiple purposes. I do Tri’s with it. Until I’m to the point that it’s holding me back from a goal it’s fine.

My wife has the one lsunurse is showing. Mine the the guy’s version.

I would prefer a more up right or a slightly forward leaning posture. I don't mind a heavy bike.

At your price point, Doesn’t matter if it’s Trek, Giant, Specialized, DB, etc. At that level they’re all the same frame material made from a factory in Taiwan or China slapped with the brand’s sticker and with the same level components. The only difference is the geometry of the frame which affects what you just posted above. Just get on as many bikes as you can and see which one feels right to you.

Slightly above your budget, I like the Jamis Coda Comp. here’s the latest one. It’s consodered a “flat bar road bike”... more for road than not. Mostly made of steel.
