A lot of options and not sure where to go. I'm not doing serious biking so I'm trying to stay around $500 on the bike. Not Wal-Mart stuff, but not super-high end composites either.

Looking at bikes from Giant, Diamondback and a couple of other midrangers.

I like a cruiser, but one I can ride for long trips, maybe carry something I buy out. Also be able to ride down the side of a levee and ollie curbs without warping rims under my weight.

I like these so far.

Diamondback Trace Dual Sport

Diamondback Edgewood

Giant Escape 3

I like the sixthreezero too, has some style.

Supposedly this is a Schwinn with better componets. I hate how Schwinn and GT went from high end, to mass produced Wal-Mart bikes. My last good bike was a '98 GT Pantera. It's still around too.

Got the Giant Escape 2 City w/disc

I have a Giant hybrid (one of the frames designed especially for women). Bike was around $600. I really like it.

Giant is the best value for a non-Walmart bike. Get a model that is best for the type of riding that you will be doing the majority of the time. If you get a hybrid and never ride it off road, what's the point? You just bought a shittier version of the bike that you should have bought in the first place.

better components than what? the comparable bikes ain't running dura ace.

that schwinn looks like it weights 75 lbs. if you're serious about riding down levees and doing some other mild off road stuff (in addition to sidewalks) go with the trace dual sport. everything else is way too hybrid/comfort/cruiser.

You can get a lower end Trek for $400-500.

I have one similar to this. About $400

I'll check out some more bike shops. My local shop pushes Giant, and Academy had the Diamnondbacks.

I really wanted another GT, and I had a few growing up. Was sad to see how crappy they and Mongoose are now.

at his price point the brand isn't going to matter that much. it's the type of bike he wants - a mountain bike, a hybrid, or a cruiser - that is the primary question.

Some friends who are more into biking are saying to get a used Trek or Cannondale.

Mine is very similar to the picture but about 10 years old. I still go riding with my daughter a few times per week. It's been a good bike for the price.

That's what I don't even know. lol

Let's rule out pure mountainbike. Besides one cruiser, that is all I have ever had. I want something with 700cc wheels.

I don't want a pure cycling bike with clip in pedals. I would prefer a more up right or a slightly forward leaning posture. I don't mind a heavy bike.

then your best bet is probably a hybrid bike. similar to the giant in your OP or the trek that fallguy posted. cruisers are fun for short, flat rides along the beach or boardwalk. but if you want to ride a little longer (and faster), the hybrid is the way go. especially if you want a more up right posture.
