Used are within your budget though.

I wouldn't get wrapped up on getting a new bike - I've found it really, really pays off to take your time, find some people at bike shops or cycling clubs, and see where they post ads on used bikes, or if they can direct you to someone. Lot of great deals on rigs that people aren't using, don't want, but just have no desire to post ads for and deal with that headache. Very often can score a $1500 bike for less than $500. Just takes some time and patience.

I bought the Electra Townie 7 speed. Love it. Aluminum frame. Great riding position.

Yes, this certainly appears to be true.

Got my bike yesterday finally, went with a Giant Escape 2 city, with disc brakes.
They had a scratch and dent at the local shop.

Nice riding bike. Seat is rough but it's light and quick and easy to maneuver.

Great, another spandexed up lance Armstrong wanna be to clog up my road when I’m trying to get to work. You bicyclists should stay on the sidewalk where you belong

It takes time to get used to any bike saddle. If you ride a lot, find one that has a hole in the middle or a split nose. Stops pressure on your taint where there is a nerve. I can't ride without one. My junk will go numb. I don't need cushion or some big bulky thing. I just need that cut away section.

I'd not recommend a 26in. Very outdated for a reason. I have this Marin (I have the DS 4, this is the 2...more in your price range) I ride to/from work on side streets, jumping over curbs and sidewalks, cutting through the park, etc. The tire is between a MTB tire and a road tire and the shock locks out if you want.

Marin DS 2

I just rode up the side ofa wet grassy levee, I think it's fine.
Though I need a slight adjustment of the front derailer.
Like a slight turn on the H screw is all.
Rides great.
Faster than any bike I've had in years. I'm worried more about curbs. I practiced ollying it and it's easy to get up curbs but I know the wheels just don't look that tough.

This is what I use on a road bike. It's not about the padding really. It's about where you put the pressure on the seat.
