Fish, contact the Gleason foundation. They were able to help a friend get a van that was already tailor made for ease of use with ALS patients

A girl I know (wheelchair bound) said to choose the conversion company first then look at the vans they specialize in.

Really? They throwing in a couple grand for the power wheelchair that I ordered. The VA will give me around 24K towards a HC van.

We’ve had both Sienna and Odyssey. Currently in the Honda, and it is a solid vehicle. That being said, our next one will likely be another Toyota.
Don’t bother with another brand. They’ll lure you in with price and features, but you’ll regret it. So many friends and family went the Dodge route... don’t do it.

As much as I hate a dam Van, I am in the need of buying one. I will have it converted over to a Handicap van.
Here is a link to a Consumer Affairs article on which ones are best. Its more for who does the conversion but it does list out some things like which vans can do side loading and which can do rear as well as the costs involved.

I have a Fort Transit which we converted to a handicap van, and it's great. What kind of conversion are you looking to do? Perhaps I can provide some insight into issues and solutions we had.

Will have to have a side door ramp for a power wheelchair. Needs to be full auto. Also a lock down for said chair inside. No need for a driver seat or controls for me. The wife will be the main driver.

Dodge seems the best bet. Everyone I know who has had a conversion done has gone with a Dodge. There is a top notch company who does conversions not far from me in Hartselle, AL.

Air ride is 100% worth the cost. It makes it so much easier to get in and out by being closer to the ground.

Transit may be too high. We have a full power side lift to get in and out. The medium roof allows a person to stand, making it easy for a helper. For what you are looking to do, you will do better with a Sienna or similar where they can lower the floor to make it easy in and out. The power chairs are more compact than my son’s chair and can maneuver around in the smaller space. Folks above are giving good advice.

You need to get a 4x4 van and make sure you put a gun rack between the front seats and set it up so you can shoot out the window. You'd have a kickass mobile deer elimination device

I will also add that help/steep discounts can often be had if you know where to look. Those vans aren't cheap, and neither are the conversions. Ask around.

Gave up hunting all together a few years back.
I'm still just looking. Still waiting on the power chair that I ordered. Using this temp one is not even close to the one I ordered. I have to see how high I will be in the chair before buying a van.

I hope you get it soon. Pops never had one of his own, but he had a loaner. Those things are unreal. When he wasn't in it, I would actually sit in it and lean back. They've come a long way over the years, for sure.
