Locksmiths in BR

I’m closing on a house in June and plan to change all the exterior door locks once I get the keys. Know of any reasonably priced locksmiths that can get all my new locks on the same key? I’m thinking of going with Schlage locks.

Buy all new locks keyed the same and install them yourself.

I know some brands offer quick key features but I’m not sure if Schlage does.

I know with Quickset they make locks that you can rekey yourself to put all on same key.

They sell sets you could install yourself and save a ton of money

I don't recommend Schlage. We went all Schlage about 4 years ago and I've had to replace 2 of them so far. An exterior knob and deadbolt. They were falling apart. The 2 long screws always need tightening, the deadbolt knobs fall off, the little knob to lock the door fell off, just seem like really cheap knobs. The interior knobs have held up but the exterior haven't. These were from Home Depot so I don't know if Schlage makes a higher quality you can buy somewhere else. If it wouldn't cost so much I'd replace every knob in my house with a different brand, which I still may do if I have another one fail.

Also, if you go to buy knobs, look on the package somewhere and they'll be a key code. If you can luck up and find the qty you need with the same key code then they'll all use the same key.

I’ve seen some information where you shouldn’t have the same keyed locks but I know most people do without any issues. It’s weird that the Schlage ones gave you so much trouble because from what I’ve read they are the best locks without going to really high end locks.

I think you can order them already keyed through Schlage

I know this by experience. Go to a locksmith and get locks vs box stores. I recommend Alford Safe and Lock. The guys there are very knowledgeable, they are also pretty busy so I’d call them ahead of time if you need them to install but they will sell you the sets for you to install.

Just be ready to deal with some of the rudest people in Baton Rouge. I guess they do a pretty good job but they are not very warm people. It is always strange going in there for me.

Totally agree.
I quit using them.
Been using a mobile service the last few years, Ricky and he did a good job.

Able Safe & Lock still open?

If that’s the one at Airline and Cedar Crest, they are. They don’t seem too bad price wise. Service is better than Alford, in my experience.

I’ve got a locksmith related question: Will a locksmith make a copy of a key marked “Do Not Duplicate”? I’ve got such a key for a storage building I bought, and I’d like to make a spare without having the building re-keyed.
Just wondering how strict locksmiths are with enforcing that designation.

Depends...sometimes locksmiths will stamp their keys so you will think that you can only use them if you need duplicates.
High security keys are usually stamped as such because only the locksmith company that installed it has access to the info for that key way. Therefore, no one else can duplicate it.
There is an unwritten locksmith code of ethics that locksmiths won’t copy keys that aren’t theirs but it’s not strictly adhered to.

If it’s a not a weird key, those automatic key making machines in some Walmarks will make them with a swipe of your debit card.

Keypad deadbolt on your main entrance... best thing I've bought... with your hands full you don't have to fool with your keys... just takes a finger to punch in the code and open sesame.
