I predict that AI will eventually replace news anchors, meteorologists, and other in-studio talent. The only humans left will be reporters in the field which likely could be replaced with drones. Local TV news will go the way of the newspaper.

I knew a local sports talk guy in Little Rock. I think he made around $30k per year, but was over $200k doing guest spots, advertising for local businesses, etc. It’s sort of like a waiter. Most of their income is on tips.

Kind of like Alabama football players.

Back in the day, local news anchors were like celebrities in their towns. They probably still didn’t make very much but they got tons of perks and free shite around town. Nowadays no one cares about local news, so not only is their pay going down but their perks are gone too. I agree it must suck and I don’t know why anyone would want to do it. Most of the older people still in it are smartly parlaying their local relevancy into cushy, more stable “communications director” positions for local companies. They’re being replaced by kids right out of college who haven’t figured out what a dead end it is yet.

Huh. I don’t remember seeing local news anchors here in New Orleans doing commercials. Maybe I just miss them. Seems like you don’t want news reporters to be appear biased

outside of being recognized in town.

I call the local news crew out and about at festivals, local happenings, by name. "Hey Debbie Williams with channel 5, when are you going live?"

I had an evening anchor for the 2nd or 3rd most popular local news station sitting behind me at a coffee shop the other day. All the old ladies kept walking up to him and seemed a little star struck. Dude was polite and would ask each one their name.

Their salaries have plummeted over the past couple of decades

A few conglomerates started buying up all the small markets and killing big contracts. That’s why you see main anchors in their 20s now and they’re probably making about $40-45k.

It happened at the station I used to work at, market 100. We had some established anchors making 6 figures and one day corporate said we’re not renewing your contract and they were gone a week later. Replaced by kids just a few years out of college.

The white female Shreveport anchors and some reporters seem to get into state govt positions of some sort when they want to earn retirement. A whole slew of them are in the school systems now in desk jobs and one from the 70's or 80's used to be a PD spokesperson for a decade or so. So what I'm saying is they use their contacts built on their TV career to get a cushy tax payer retirement.

Aren't most of those people trying to move up? It shouldn't be surprising that the pay at Panama City or Mobile, AL isn't great. But if you are good and work your way up there's money to be made. If your market is only $300k people I don't see why the pay would be great? As said I'm sure the pay in the top 10 markets is just fine, not to mention all of the national shows make bank.

I know a former morning anchor in Jxn, MS. She was paid a pittance. Had to get up at something like 0300, which meant going to bed when the sun was still out. As her kids got a little older, said said F' that and joined the ranks of the stay-at-home Junior Leaguers.

We lived next to the weatherman for the top station in a large midwestern city. He didn't have all that high an income, based on the neighborhood. And he was doing a local TV game show on the side to manage that. It stopped being weird pretty quickly. Great guy and family.

Also have to say that we lived a few houses down from Myron Cope who was the sportscaster in Pittsburgh that was the creator of the Terrible Towel and who called Steelers games. He was doing decently, again by the neighborhood. And he was a saint in his family life, which was an incredible challenge. It's on the internet so - his wife died while giving birth to a severely autistic son. We didn't see him a lot because he spent a lot of time taking care of his son. Heh - I just saw that Myron Cope was the first broadcaster elected to the NFL hall of fame. Well deserved.
