I read the AG press conference. I think this will easily be national news in the next 48 hours. The school district claiming it’s not a school thing, and the 313 hearings make you think this is within the house family crimes.

I was a little too preoccupied to post here immediately post-Katrina, so I'm not sure if there was any discussion here regarding a similar recurring tactic that was taking place at the time....

I personally know of 2 females who were pulled over and given the option of:

a) Rolling the he said/she said dice choosing jail for a drunk & disorderly/DUI + resisting arrest (translation:: being incredulous vs. completely compliant while falsely accused)

-OR-

b) Taking a ride around the block for a "breathalyzer test" and released.

I first remember hearing to "things" occurring from service industry comrades in the FQ a couple 3 weeks after the storm... but I kinda dismissed it all as rumor. I was always very wary of regular folks in general...and should I ever find the police involved - I had the business cards (w/ "direct line" # in pen) of a few highly ranked & respected NOPD folks I could call if I wanted to. Still couldn't stop it from happening to a friend of mine... one who I had been hanging out with for the better part of the evening just prior.

All the details I care to share: It was late September. She had just returned to town... Dropped off by a friend who had evacuated to the same locale. Her car wasn't good for a long haul, but around town was just fine. After getting some clothes together at her place uptown - She drove her vehicle from her place a couple miles away and parked her car on a fringe street in the FQ that morning - not planning on moving it as the plan was for her to stay with me on Dumaine the next couple days. We proceeded to get marinated throughout the day. Shortly after dinner time - She told me she wanted to get some CDs to play later that night and would be back in 10-15 minutes. She was gone for about half an hour before I realized it was taking a while. Waited 10 more minutes then made to lap to her car (empty and where it was supposed to be)... and back to the bar... followed by many attempts to contact her in many ways over the next half hour.... And then she walked back into the bar with an indescribably distant expression on her face. Long story short: She had some things on her record... all of which had been non-issues for almost a decade at that point. She was pretty well buzzed when an officer approached her as she was walking to her vehicle. She explained she was just going to retrieve music... He "escorted her for her safety." Got to the car... sat down while the officer waited nearby, retrieved the CD case from the console... the moment she turned the key for accessory power to eject the CD in the player - a squad car appeared along side and flipped on the party lights. I can't speak for her decision-making at that point as I was not there... but in her mind - There really wasn't an option. She was working on getting full custody of her kid and couldn't risk going to jail and took a humiliating ride around the block. She was so frazzled after that a basic description of the officers involved was really all she recalled... Badge #s, License Plate and Unit #.... All jumbled in her mind and therefor useless. I never had eyes on either one so I was of no use in helping resolve the situation. Left me feeling helpless and depressed... and guilty that wasn't able to prevent it.

So it can happen. It does happen.
