Can anyone tell me if they'll stay alive in a cooler on ice for 48 hours? Should I just freeze them?

Probably. Just make sure you drain the water and ice as needed.

Leave drain open and make sure they do not sit in water I put something in bottom to keep them out of the water or prop opposite side up

How much do they cost per pound where you plan on buying?
Posted on 6/12/19 at 5:43 pm to thewarmth
Also see if you can put a burlap sack or something over them to keep the ice from touching them directly. That’s always worked for me. And as everyone said above keep drain open
Posted on 6/12/19 at 5:44 pm to thewarmth
Keep ice on them and aerate their water

I'm piggybacking this here instead of starting a new thread, how would I keep 2 sacks of crawfish alive for about 8-10 hours?
Posted on 6/12/19 at 5:56 pm to thewarmth
Crabs - if they are freshly caught shouldn’t be an issue, on the other hand if they already been on ice or in a cooler for “x” number days and you don’t know what “x” is then it is questionable.

Store them literally anywhere other than underwater or direct sunlight

Crawfish - ice chest, ice on top of sacks, drain cock open to allow water to drain as ice melts, and keep the cooler in the shade at all times. Of course if you have a spare beer refrigerator that would be better, but then you’d probably know this.

yes they will be fine as long as you let all the water drain out as ice melts. they go to sleep when cold but will drown if covered by water because they cant move their gills to breath and survive by breathing air.
at the camp we used to keep crabs in a refrigerator for a week until we had enough to boil, we only caught one or two each day in the trap under the pier

for that you better use dry ice or boil ahead of time and then pack in cooler with some frozen water bottles

Put a bag of ice on the bottom of the ice chest. Don’t take the ice out, just put the whole bag on the bottom. Then put a towel on top.put the crabs on top and you’ll be fine. They’ll go dormant and when you take them out and they start warming up they’ll get active again

They should if they’re in a cooler.

Only a rookie or yankee buys blue crabs by the pound.
I usually buy them by the bushel or dozen.
