I've played all kinds of stuff for my kids, they're bandsmen as well, so they are open to different things.

#1 son, now in his 20s, is into country, but so am I to a point.
#2 son likes varied stuff, Rat Pack, big band, Pentatonix and a capella groups, WWOZ, classic rock....

When I'm driving the kids hear my playlist(from AC/DC to Fugazi to The Cure to The Ventures to Sinatra, etc.) and First Wave or Deep Tracks on satellite radio. Not that difficult to avoid non-musical "music."

Introduce them to Slayer and Lamb of God, then they will hate hip hop, as all of us should.

I think the problem is that you're listening to pop.

At least one radio station up here plays 90's/00's/recent alternative rock. Even that's more decent than whats on now.

I agree with you. We make playlists or my lil one plays his own CDs. We listen to a lot of talk radio too

I have two young teen boys...it seems as though every other song on the radio is either The Weeknd talking about "heat between your legs" or Nikki Minaj saying something really nasty.

Yeah...I miss the good old days when I was in school and you'd catch wholesome tunes like Sugar Walls, or Like A Virgin, or Hot Blooded, or I Want Your Sex, or well...you get the point.

Just pointing out that most things that are popular to teenagers contain a lot of inappropriate stuff.

What you mean to say is that many things popular to teenagers at nearly all times in history were considered inappropriate by someone. As it's been pointed out, from literally the time rock & roll hit the radio parents have found something to be infuriated about. Hell...the very TERM Rock & Roll means fricking after all...

Truth is, because it's broadcast they are still very limited in the actual words that can be said on air. And as far as innuendo, again...you my find it more blatant but I'm sure we could spend the next few hours pulling songs lyrics from decades ago that when you actually read them are no better than what you're upset by today.

A suggestion from one parent of two boys (one a teenager) to another, pick another fight. Very few things will make someone want to listen to or partake in something than making it taboo. By suggestion it's inappropriate to them, you're just telling them to go behind your back and check it out. Honestly, you'd be better served playing it, deciding it sucks and then playing stuff you like as a comparison in terms of quality.

Your mileage may vary though...
