Two come to mind:

One was the closest I've been to a lightning bolt. It hit a lamp at the end of my grandparents driveway. I was close enough where it didn't sound like thunder, just a buzz and a loud pop.

Driving through Iowa at night headed to the 2017 CWS. One of those Great Plains storms where there was no darkness between flashes. Just constant strobing for at least 20 minutes.

Had a family member killed by lightning. Got caught out in a freak thunderstorm, hit him in the head and went out his ankle. Instantly dead.

My great uncle was struck twice and and survived. Both times climbing poles while he was in the army.

Backpacking in the Wind River Range, it was popping all around us. You could feel the static electricity.

In high school. Was trying to log onto AOL to chat up some babes. Lightning hit the bid house outside 15 feet from me. I could feel it somewhat. It was strange. Birds got roasted.

Another time in a river kayak fishing. Felt lime it was safer to get on shore and put up the tarp. Then lightning hit a tree 200 feet from me. I just stayed put

My uncle was locking a metal shop one time and the exact time he grabbed the door knob, lightning struck and knocked him like 8 feet into the air and bunch of soybean bags broke his fall. He was disoriented, but my dad was able to get him to the truck, and we took him to the hospital. He was shook up and kind of concussed, but was fine after a couple weeks.

I got caught up in a thunderstorm in the middle of a field one time on a tractor and lightning struck the implement attached to the tractor I was on. Nothing happened. Just sounded like a shotgun going off inside the cab.

A couple that I can remember.

Family vacation in the second half of the 80s. We were staying in Port St. Joe and drove out to Cape San Blas and around to St Joseph's Point. Stopped at a gas station on 98 right across the road from the bay as a storm blows in. Huge bolt of lightning hits in the bay. Seagulls are almost immediately on it going after the fish that are stunned/killed.

The house I grew up in was in in town Atlanta, built in the 50s. All utilities were above ground/on poles. The incoming phone line laid across the phone line for the house next door. Had a bolt hit the line just off the pole and followed it to the house. When it got to the point where the two lines crossed it split and followed both into their respective houses. If it hadn't it probably would have caused a fire. As it was, it blew out a couple of wall jacks and melted the service box on the side of the house.

We were at the beach and a storm formed right over us. We folded down the umbrella and pulled the chairs and stuff under it figuring we’d go to the condo and let it pass. From the condo we could not see our spot but this thing blew up and I could see shite blowing down the beach. Chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards…and lots of thunder.

It stopped for the most part and I went down trying to make sure our stuff wasn’t gone. Sand was wet and it was misting.

Me and one other dad were down checking on things and there was a crack, flash, BOOM and a quick shock through the air. I dropped/threw what I was holding and the other dad 10 yds from did the same thing. We looked at each other and hauled arse.

Don’t know where it hit but the charge carried through the mist in the air and wet sand. I tell everyone I was struck by lightning.

Only thing missing was my smallest kids boogie board ….I found it 100 yds down the beach.

Was fishing on lake Bistineaux in the 80s.

Heard some idiot yelling and when I turned to look, lightning stuck a fool standing in a boat.

Lightning struck my house in Biloxi, MS back in the early 90s… set it on fire.

Was a member of a church that was looking to replace it's 70 year old plus building. Place was basically pine knot. It got struck by lightning and was burning, someone nearby called to report it. FD put it out. The more religious folk were grateful that it didn't burn down. Those of us younger folk that were really being asked to make a long term commitment to the new building were like "The Lord sent us a free church building paid for by the insurance and some nosey arse neighbor called it in"

I’ve seen it hit trees near me 5 or 6 times.

An outrigger got hit one time offshore. I was on the bridge and it scared me. Fricked up the outrigger.

The scariest was when my friend and I were each running cross country from Lake Decade to Houma in airboats. We could see the weather, tried to make a straight shot to Houma but got caught West of Lake Theriot by the storm.

We got out and got away from the boats. The lightning came raining down. I wanted to bury myself in the marsh.
