Make sure you leave a light on too. I would hate for your electricity to freeze up.

Right. Most people think you're supposed to do this because they say running water won't freeze. The real reason is that the water in the underground pipes is warmer than the water in exposed pipes, so letting the faucet drip is slowly bringing the warmer water into the exposed pipes.

Also, you don't own the place, so it's not really your problem if pipes burst.

This is what's wrong with our country today.

My landlord sent the complex a message telling us to let our faucets drip to avoid pipes freezing in the cold weather.

Does this really work?

Or is it just a ploy to increase payment on water bills?

You can't be serious with these questions.

If you are referring to the first statement, yes it can provided the flow is adequate to avoid freezing. For south Louisiana, that is a pretty small flow.

If you mean does the obvious troll really invite reactionary posts, apparently it does really work

First of all, I was being facetious.

Secondly, I have done more than enough for this country.

Third, I'm not wrong. A land lord should ensure that his plumbing is up to date and no issues. He could easily insulate or upgrade if this is an issue. It's easy to do as a renter, so I can see where you think my comment was a dickhead statement. Also, I have done this before when I rented.

Fourth, the OP is in Louisiana. I know there is just as much risk there with cold weather as anywhere, but I'm in Illinois and it was -1 this morning and currently 9. I don't do this at my house because I know that my house is fine.

Also, like I said you can let a dribble out for a whole year and you wouldn't incur a $3000 bill.

Sry I offended you, but I'm not one of these people you think I am.

A dripping faucet isn't going to move enough water to keep warmer water from the supply in the lines. That tiny bit of water being turned over is going to chill in a heartbeat. You run a drip so the faucet valve is slightly open when the temperatures are expected to drop. On the upstream side of the frozen plug, the valve to the main is open and ice can push water back into the main to relieve pressure. On the downstream side of the frozen plug is where your faucet is and you crack that open a little so the ice can push water out the faucet to relieve pressure.

I've had the lines going to dripping faucets freeze solid before, but they luckily didn't break because the faucet was open.

Don't do it!

It is a scam by the apartment complex. I know an ole baw doing 25 to life in Angola for leaving the faucet dripping in his apartment.

Fun fact, I had a buddy in high school that used to charge his GF for taking showers at his place. He would keep a notebook with how many\much showers\food\electricity she used and present her with a bill at the end of the month. She left him rather quickly

Why would your landlord try and trick you into increasing your water bill? Does he also own the local water company?

Some of you would be in a world of shite (and broken pipes) if you ever had to live where it actually gets cold.

I mean, yeah, it most certainly is his problem if the pipes bust. He may not be financially responsible, but it's going to be an epic inconvenience.
