Is there not a requirement that you report it? The two cases I know of personally at the undergrad level both resulted in the students having take a semester off of classes (both were SEC schools).

That or just made it up. Always my strategy when I didn't feel like giving a shite about my papers.

Yeah that's not gonna happen.

Zero if they deny it. A change to recover (48 hours) up to a high D if they take responsibility. Why? Because these "students" become shitty workers in the professional environment and too many of them get away with
tactics, and thus have an inflated resume because of it.

Topic?
Just give them a 0 and tell him/her that they are lucky you won't refer this to the Dean which would get them expelled for academic fraud for 1 year.
If they complain any further, refer them.

I catch about 1 or 2 a semester plagirising.
I tell them they have been caught. They get a zero for the assignment. If caught again they get referred to academic affairs.
If some clown actually tried to repeatedly lie to me and made me go through the effort to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt....right to academic affairs, Incomplete for the class.

It's already on the Dean's desk. Thanks to the lying. So we can put that one to bed already.

0 on the paper and make them do a reflection paper on on why plagiarism is wrong and what they learned from it.
"You must complete a 3 page typed paper with one inch margins, double spaced,12 pt. font discussing your violation, sanction, and what you have learned from the experience. Any sources should be properly cited in MLA Format."

This is where I'm leaning.

It really depends on the circumstances IMO.
If you're teaching English and this person is an English major then it matters.
If you're teaching English and this person is an Engineering major then who gives a frick.

harsher! cheating is bad enough... lying about it makes it worse.

so your question is then what should your in-class response be like?
Seems obvious, Incomplete, pending Dean's investigation...let em twist
