I wish La still had their state run hospitals to help these people, it's really sad they just act like the problem isn't there. It's only going to get worse will all of the baby boomers, veterans and illegals. The shelters, medical hospitals and jails aren't equipped to handle it. Look at dysfunction in the VA hospitals just trying to care for our veterans.

shes a nola girl that was head of the NOPD crises unit and worked her arse off trying to make a difference. Her hands were tied and she finally stepped down. I think she works for the city now in some sort of the same capacity.

I'm sure a lot of them actually feel that suicide is a cowards way out and that mental health problems are something you can tough out.

They are also stupid.

I read it all and certainly agree. I was/am close to others who deal with depression.

Yeah. It is a huge problem. A problem that a lot of people don't want to talk about. It's easier to make like these people don't exist. There are a lot of decent people (and some not so decent people) working hard to help. They do help but it's just so massive. Another problem is that the public usually doesn't know what resources ARE available and don't take advantage of them. They also don't know how and when to properly utilize them. It's truly an issue that can't be totally solved with government money. People have to help each other instead of turning blind eyes to it. Mental health research has learned so much over recent decades but those lessons haven't been implemented quickly enough. IMO, institutionalized care for the right individuals would be a wonderful thing for them and society.

God bless her.

I feel like this is true because the mentally ill don't usually vote and the majority don't care because as someone put it quite well earlier, people suck at empathy and cant see an issue as real or meaningful until it applies to them or someone they love.

To me, this is so true about many, many issues, including mental health.

Where is this line drawn between depression and anxiety versus people that need to grow up and be mature functioning adults? Real question. We all face troubles, how does your handling of the problems change your mental wellness?

That would be a good question for a psychiatrist. But both responsible and irresponsible people can have mental illness. It'd be up to a professional to hash out which behaviors are attributed to illness.

I went for a physical at my VA after I returned from Afghanistan in 2010. Everything was fine and I'm getting ready to leave and I was given three prescriptions, I asked why and the PA told me that was SOP for guys just home from a combat tour...

I didnt indicate any issues and I didnt talk to a mental health person, just handing out Lexapro, Ambien and I dont recall the third drug.

When it isn't just a couple of days of the blues, and it effects your every day life. When you worry constantly about stupid shite that doesn't even matter, enough that you are effected in every day life. Real answer.

We all fall down. Some people's knees get scraped, other's break their leg.

It's a loaded question, and you know it.

It's amazing how the general public seems to look at mental health problems with disdain, a failure, yet mental health problems plague the wealthy and successful as well, perhaps even acting as a driving force in some cases.

I've worked with many that were at the relative top of their industry yet seemed to have some pretty serious issues, eg, bipolar, manic, paranoia. I'm sure most in the legal practice would agree.

depression doesn't give a frick about how much money and perceived happiness you have or should have based on your position in life. it's a filthy count who will try to tear down even the strongest people in the world.
