Lets talk about mental health in america

I would like to start off by saying i am not a doctor, I work in the mental health industry, and around patients every day dealing with mental illness ranging from depression all the way to full blown schizophrenia.
It really bothers me when i see a thread about someone who has committed suicide and then countless people jump on to be cute or funny and post heartless things like they dont care if they dont value life, or that they were weak minded and couldnt overcome being sad, or that they were a pussy and took the easy way out. When you're dealing with someone with mental illness, they dont think like you or I do, they cant deal with things like your or i can. And alot of times they dont speak out, or talk about whats bothering them is because of these types of comments or what people will think of them. Its the stigma we still have when dealing with someone with a mental illness. They are afraid of speaking out and being called crazy, or looney. They often believe that their condition is a sign of personal weakness or that they should be able to control it without help. But in reality Seeking psychological counseling, educating theirself about the condition and connecting with others with mental illness can help gain self-esteem and overcome destructive self-judgment.
Im sorry this has been long but after several post in the robin williams thread it really just got to bothering me, because that isnt the first thread from suicide i have seen those types of post in.
Mental Health is a major problem in this country, they are constantly cutting funding and pushing it to the back burner of budgets. But when something major happens and some "crazy" person shoots up a school they want to blame guns, or video games.. instead of looking for mental illness and trying to give people a better understanding of mental illness and help fund treatment for patients.
Like i said first, im no doctor.. i just work at a hospital for patients with mental illness. Hell when i started here i was dumb about mental illness, i thought it was something people claimed to gain a free check every month. But its real, its very real.. Since ive been here i have seen things that literally scare me to death. Losing control of your own mind is the scariest thing to me. I have seen athletes come through, who one year are playing division 1 football and about to go to the nfl and make millions, and the next thing they know they are dealing with mental illness and their lives changed forever. Ive seen old classmates come through who i had no clue were dealing with anything, seem perfectly fine.. but in reality are battling demons every day in their mind. So before you are so quick to judge, or jump to conclusion.. educate yourself.
TLDR i know have a good day everyone
For the ones here with learning disabilities i broke it up a little bit for you guys so it wasnt so crammed together

People are cold and empty inside. It's our lives today. We are detached and miserable, and many it's sad to say don't even think of them as someone's son, daughter mother, father, brother, sister, or loved one. It's just entertainment and a reality show for them to enjoy.

I agree completely.
Here's an up vote.
Mental illness isn't taken seriously enough in this country and our society is extremely ignorant in this area.

quote:
i have seen things that literally scare me to death.
Then how are you alive now?
I'm sorry, but using literally in the wrong manner is a pet peeve of mine.
The correct terminology is "i have seen things that figuratively scare me to death"

I have a theory on the rise of mental illiness. We evolved to hunt, fish, work hard in growing and collecting our food. Over the last 50-70 years, we have moved to working in office buildings, and no mental stimulation. That's not enough time to adapt to our new environment. Add that to females trying to take on traditional male roles as providers for their family, and you will have some mental issues in our society.

- I know mental illness is real.
- I know it is stigmatizing.
- I know for many, there is little or no chance of pulling out/managing on your own.
- Nonetheless, I believe mental illness is both over and under diagnosed.
- I believe it is used as a crutch for a segment of society that thrives on attention, and the medical community isn't helping this.
- I believe that segment of society make things more difficult for those truly battling with mental illness or behavioral health issues.

I have a theory, people have always been fricking crazy, however with better wages, and better health care more people with those illnesses are being properly diagnosed and treated.
