Psychosomatic.

But that doesn't mean the people aren't experiencing pain or that it's "not real". It's just caused by their own fricked up mind.

My mom has recently claimed to have RLS and it cracks me up. It's just anxiety, take a Benadryl and drink a glass of red wine and BOOM symptoms gone.

Yes and no.

Different symptoms and diagnoses but can be over dramatized

Can occur in elite cross country runners and marathoners.

Basically it's adrenaline and adrenaline dump and eventually your adrenal glands don't produce as much anymore. I think this could happen but can be over reported.

I can see this also happening to cops firefighters military

You mean people that run too much get tired? Sounds pretty weird to me.

It's described as "Widespread muscle pain and tenderness."

I have that after I work out. I must have fibromyalgia.

I was actually pretty pissed when doctors tried to diagnose my medical issues as Fibromyalgia, especially since it is viewed as such a fake or related to depression. It has taken me years of fighting that diagnosis to discover that my medical problems are actually due to MS (multiple sclerosis).

I do believe there are people who really do have genuine issues with fatigue and pain but then there are the assholes who want to use Fibro as an excuse for their lazy, whiny, attention seeking ways.

But let's also give some of the blame for this to some of the crappy doctors who would rather just give this diagnosis rather than do the work to find out the real cause of the issues.

hat being said, everyone that I have ever met that claims they have it are inactive/middle aged or older/ and have terrible diets.

My mother "had it" in her early 50s as she was going through her divorce with my father. She gained a lot of weight and had the most atrocious diet. She moved to Florida started eating better, statutes working out, lost 40 lbs, made a new group of friends and the Fibromyalgia miraculously disappeared.

Fibromyalgia

I certainly a "catch all" diagnosis a good bit of the time.

However, if you actually read the medical literature on it you see that there are specific criteria for diagnosis. The common presentation is a middle aged woman with some sort of history of depression. Patients also typically don't sleep well.

The good rheumatologists I've work with focus on a treatment plan of good mental health (treatment for depression), improving sleep, and exercise. It's amazing how much better people get with these simple things. Pain pills do nothing.

Like any other "mental" illness it is difficult to quantify. These patients are indeed hypersensitive to pain. Whether real or imagined the reality is the same to them. That being said, I cringe when I get a fibromyalgia patient because I know they will most likely be high maintenance, and there will be less I can do to treat their problem.

I'm not sure why it has become en vogue for so many people to self-diagnose themselves with it though. It's like people driving around with handicap tags like a badge of honor.

It's legit, but a large amount of people are faking it.

Just like ADHD - it's real, but so overdiagnosed that most of the people that "have it" don't really have it.

My wife exactly.

Her doc has been switching up her medicine lately. She was on something that kept her up at night. They tried something else, but she found she lacked energy. She's now on a third medicine, one she had luck with before, and it seems to be helping her.

Just curious, have any of your patients mentioned anything about prolonged back pain? My wife doesn't usually have pain all over. Usually localized to her back. And it lingers for days. While I might strain a muscle or have some soreness after a day of yard work, it usually goes away in 2-3 days max. She can do something not that strenuous and she has knots all in her back for a week or more. I try to massage them out, she uses a foam roller, and she might take Aleve to ease the tension. But nothing seems to work quickly, and it isn't like she's lifting anything all that heavy to strain her muscles. They just get all knotted up.

The women I know that claim to have it seem to either be hypochondriacs, drama queens, and whiny asses. None of them are normal.

I only know of a few, but they are all trashy pill head looking weirdo's.

Seems more to me like they just found an excuse to not do shite.

It's a shame cause it may be a real deal, but the type of people generally afflicted do it no justice.
