re: Let’s discuss colonizing Mars. Why?

Why are we equating “colonizing” with exploration and research? Even if there is a long term manned station there it’s not colonization.
And the moon is the stepping stone, not Mars. It’s why the big project to put a refueling space station in lunar orbit is called “Gateway”
Our moon is our best testing and proving ground for long term space exploration and research. It's a much better commute than Mars.

I am guessing Columbus heard arguments similar to this too.

1) humans would have to be supported at all times by an artificial bubble in order to survive
2) all needs would have to be met artificially - food and water
3) psychologically how would it be healthy for a human to never be able to go outside nor breathe natural air?
4) As a launching point to other planets this too seems like a falsehood. No proof of any other planets that could support life have been discovered.
So aside from being cool to say humans went there, what’s the point in estalblishing a colony on an inhabitable planet ?
If it is anything like space exploration to this point getting there is about 1/1000 of the reason...the main reason is the amount of innovative technology that is developed to do such things. NASA has been one of the largest driving economic engines ever known to man. The crap we have today that are a result of that spending makes the dollar amount spent seem miniscule. Such programs average close to a 4/1 return on investment.

This is the other side of the equation. Its what man has always done when he had the resources and technology.

That's the only purpose of the entire space program.
There's no practical benefit whatsoever.
People can blab about the space program producing Tang and velcro and this that and the other technological innovation, but there's no reason we couldn't have invented them to fill the needs that they actually fulfill instead of inventing them to send people to the moon or Mars or some shite.

The technological advances that would be achieved just to TRY and make this feasible would advance society by an almost incalculable degree.
It would eventually change every aspect of your life.

I take it you have never seen a little movie called Total Recall?

Mankind will have to branch out into space if he plans on surviving long term. our rate of consumption of resources will catch up with us and we wont be able to maintain our current standard of living.

That is incorrect.

I think it would be a great place to populate with Democrats! Their out-of-this world ideas and pollcies would fit well.

Not really

maybe the going outside thing

We don't have to live on those planets for us to want to go to them. Could be for mining or whatever else.

I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that we won't be significantly closer to colonizing Mars in the next 100 years than we are now.
The distance and logistics to construct and sustain a colony are astronomical to overcome.

Be a lot easier building domes and underground facilities on the moon rather than Mars. Still near impossible though.

It looks to me like it is entirely doable for the moon at least for a serious research station. Our moon is a satellite with vast sums of resources already in orbit. Tunneling to avoid radiation, growing food, mining are all there in a great proving ground.
3D printing as manufacturing will be more than handy.
