This. There are parishes that might have 3 or 4 high schools. Two maybe even three of them have under 200 students each.

If a parish does have 3 schools with less than 200 students and a 4th school with, lets say, 300 students. By merging the 4 schools, at the max you have 900 students. It seems like there is more that can be offered to 900 students than 200 students.

When it comes to athletics, then there can be more outside funding. Yes, academics should come before athletics, but that doesn't diminish the importance of athletics. Of course English, math, science and history is top priority, but beyond those four subjects, an argument can be made that what athletics teaches is equal or more important. Of course not every student participates in athletics, but athletics also provides other avenues for students to participate in (it increases the interest & justification for bands, it provides a landscape for students interested in media, photography, etc).

yes. we have struggled since forever probably due in part to the fact that we live beyond our means as a state and Universities are inherently expensive. That said, don't buy into the narrative- though its been told for forever- that the university isn't funded or always gets cut. It simply isn't true. They may not get ALL the maoney they request, but they get plenty. Trouble is, if they don't get 100% funded, they claim they were cut. If they ask for $1 million and only get $90,000 they cry about being cut. They aren't exactly honest. And we won't even address their spending habits.

Athletics are a part of the college experience. There's lots of other gubmint waste that is less deserving of funding than college sports. Duck Dynasty's $300K per episode for one.
