My natural grandfather was a Pencostal preacher who ran off with his piano player. He had a reputation of fooling around with the musicial help, eg organists etc.

Hugh Freeze made it a point to speak in churches. He constantly quoted scriptures. He was outspoken about faith, all the while banging hookers.

What is it about being overly religious that attracts a double life?

“Religious” people are human. Everyone makes mistakes. Kind of like this thread.

The most unethical people I've met in my life were deeply religious. Something to hide behind.

Typically the biggest sinner also becomes the most judgmental.

Meh, some people are big into appearances. Meaning, they need to project the image of a perfect wife, kids, godly man, joining their local charity, probably even their local country club, with a virtuous life style.

Find me a man that truly walks in the footsteps of the Lord, and I'll find you twenty more that just do it "for show."

It's always the ones who present themselves as infallible you have to worry about most.

I think a lot of people, in the South especially, that are involved in some profession or other capacity that involves there being some amount of importance placed on public perception feel that being active in church and/or claiming an active spiritual life is essential.

They are putting on airs and not really down for the cause.

I think that’s really what it is rather than truly religious people living a double life.

Some people just need to play the game.

True, but if you’re going to be preaching morals to somebody your arse better be living by them.

That's exactly what it is. Some people playing the game. It's a facade so they can be perceived in a certain light.

There’s a reason Christ spoke as he did towards the religious elites of his time. He specifically condemned those who honor him with their mouths and yet their hearts are far from him.

The Bible is full of analysis on people like this. The gospels tell Jesus' view quite clearly. Short version: they aren't thought too highly of.

Some people live all aspects of their lives in more extreme ways.

Same person may be highly religious growing up around one group and a crazy wild party goer growing up around another.
