I don't know why, but I don't like the look of a leather strap. Perhaps that's something that will come with time as I (if I..) come to appreciate watches more. As of now, I just think it takes away from the overall look.
When I was doing some research I found some watches with massive, gigantic faces, dials all out the sides, and leather or plastic looking bands that were like $5,000. It blew my mind.
