Lots of things cause cramping. Sometimes opposite causes.

Too little potassium as well as too much potassium (if you have low kidney function).

When’s the last time you got a comprehensive metabolic panel blood test done? It might be time for a visit to the doctor.

My leg cramps ended up being a sign of kidney disease. 10 years later (2 months ago) I had a kidney transplant performed.

When people say cramp are they talking about charley horses or the stinging pain of the feeling coming back into your legs after they've fallen asleep?

What is that second thing referred as then.. when the feeling comes back to your legs.. colloquially as a cramp as well? Those are just as momentarily debilitating.

I got a charley horse under my chin after a yawn one time. Now that was painful.

I know exactly what you’re talking about, but I don’t know what it’s called.

“The wakening”?

Get your A1C checked if you haven't already. Leg cramps like that can be an early sign of the diabeetus.

I know pickle juice will make them go away quickly once they happen, so maybe a good swig at bedtime to help prevent them ?

Vitamin B helps me. I'll have little spasms occasionally in the evenings that I've learned are "pre-shocks" of sort (thinking in terms of earthquake warnings) for the gunshot midnight cramps. I forget who suggested it, but, I pop a Vitamin B supplement as soon as I feel the pre-shocks spasms and it seems to prevent it.

OP get some blood work. Low iron can cause that to.

Several of you have mentioned blood work. I see the Dr. first week of November, and I'm sure he will order it. I did have blood work done last year after these episodes, and it came back fine.

Pickle juice

I have some. I think it does help. Certainly helped on the lower leg cramps, but these new ones up higher on my thigh, I'm not sure yet.

you probably have some electrolytes out of balance.

The keto diet was last year in my original posting, not doing it now, but I am going to drink some sugar free gatorade during the day now.

Not scare you. Friend of mine had leg pain/cramps. Similar to yours. Turned out to be cancer.

Not scary to me. Most of my family has died from cancer, most about 5 years from my current age.

Thanks all for the replies. Ordered some stuff today, going to get a few other things tomorrow.

I can't describe how painful these newest ones have been. Last night I thought if I could hobble over to my dresser and get my gun, I would put my pain out that way, it was that bad.

I am going to keep pickle juice by my dresser. I will get a couple of the supplements and see where that gets me, and I'm going to drink some gatorade each day, the sugar free one.

As I mentioned, I do go to the Dr first week of November, and I'm sure he will do full blood work.

Thanks all for the replies

I suffered from this for about 2 years and it went away on its own. This was before RLS was a named thing. So a long time ago, but I know exactly what it is. Perhaps this medication is doing the opposite of RLS and locking up the muscles? I'm not a doctor. But I am a Georgia graduate which makes me, on average, more intelligent than most people.

Could you have too much potassium? For instance orange juice and a couple bananas caused cramps for me once.

I dunno about cramps, but I take anti-rejection meds following a liver transplant and the doctors are always worried about potassium levels being too high. For years I had to take a powder called Valtessa everyday to keep Potassium in check. And if a blood test showed it inching up I had to take something called Kayexalate to bring it down.
