The Advocate Story about the I-10 Widening Project
quote:
In a change from the initial announcement, Louisiana's transportation chief said Thursday he doubts that Gov. John Bel Edwards' $600 million highway plan will allow the state to widen Interstate 10 completely from the Mississippi River bridge to the I-10/12 split. Shawn Wilson, secretary for the state Department of Transportation and Development, said the key question is how much of the 3.5-mile corridor can be widened for $350 million, which would be allocated for the project.

We can't complete this for $100 million/mile?

The feds probably wouldn't loan us the full $600 million

If this will not meet the goal, then we don't need to spend it. this money needs to go to a future bridge/loop. I'm sure the people who use this stretch of interstate on a regular basis are used to the shite show and could endure another few years with out a widening. Plus all the businesses along the perkins overpass would enjoy a few more years of uninterrupted business.

Building highways gets priced like crawfish. Always going up.

THIS DAMNIT! These fricking fools will spend the money to widen things halfway which will have zero net effect and we will have to sit through the years of orange barrels. Do it all or nothing. PLEASE.
But, of course, someone's brother in law has already bought a yacht in anticipation of the deal getting funneled to his company so we will spend the money.

Another reason why JBE wants to raise your taxes!
Smoke screen.

My God, $600m for that little stretch.
ETA. I see. Hoping to get it done for $350m. Man that’s a hell of a deal

Yep. Raising the income tax is bullshite. They just want the Democrat voting block excluded. I wish we'd get rid of property and income taxes and just have a state sales tax.

Not with all the palm greasing that will be required.

I honestly thought this would be done on time and on budget.
Law of Averages and all.

I'm done with this damn state is any fricking Republican capitulates to allowing that a-hole to raise the income tax (including taking the federal tax deduction).

I honestly don’t mind paying a bit higher taxes if I actually see and receive some sort of benefit in return.
Louisiana seems to raise its taxes left and right and somehow gets worse and worse. It would be impressive if it wasn’t so clearly corruption and incompetence blended into one shite cocktail.

Was just saying this. The incompetence is beyond imagination

So they did the old bait and switch?
They put out an excellent plan only to tell you they didn't have the money.
This project is twenty years overdue, and every day its delayed its one too many.

Gotta pay for George's to get more free covered parking.

Welp, time to fund the next study.
Posted on 2/22/18 at 4:59 pm to Emteein
So we at least get another $30 million study out of this right? A study to see if the previous study is correctly allocated

Somewhat of a digression from the thread topic since this isn't a toll road project, but........
The primary reason highway expansion has always been a better option than investing in other transit such as rail, especially in the south, is cheaper construction costs combined with much lower operational costs.
Road expansion is still the best solution, especially in rural and suburban areas, but if urban highway expansion costs keep increasing and you still have pay user fees (tolls) rail becomes a much more realistic option in moving people to and from the urban core.
Of course either way still sucks for pass-through traffic.
