Go visit her and ask if she wants to be buried or cremated. Honor her wishes as economically as possible. It will probably mean something to your daughter.

Is donating the body to science cheaper or would the ex-wife have to sign off on this?

Or alligator farm (or swamp). Crabber Dale may be worth a call.
Seriously, tough spot. Keep the daughter happy….to an extent. Good luck.

People saying a shovel haven’t dug a big hole before, you can rent a mini excavator for about $50/hr from Home Depot.
After digging a grave for a golden retriever in August I discovered why most people get buried in shallow graves

Was it mandatory to pay a transport company? Did you have the option to use your own car?

As of a few months ago they were not accepting. May have started accepting again.

Donate to science/research. They’ll cremate then send the ashes back to you free of charge.

When I’m dead, just throw me in the trash.

Note to self: re-evaluate who you put as emergency contact.
Not so much about the price. Moreso about the spirit.
Sounds like the old broad probably needed to reevaluate herself as a human being much earlier and this ex was likely the only person she had to count on to do anything.

You are a better man than me. I’d tell the hospital that it sounds like the emergency is over.

This! Eveytime i watch a movie now i look at the hole that this person has supposely dug just to judge if it is accurate for the timeframe given.

Based on experience, it is best to clarify that cremation is desired before she passes.
There may be some funeral homes /services which jump in immediately to "provide" billable services.
