You can easily get by just learning a few key tourist phrases. Bathroom, red and white wine, do you have a hotel room, air conditioner, etc.

If you are going major tourist cities (Florence, Rome, Milan, Sorrento) you will find most Italians (or other nationalities living in Italy) speak English. Most Italians will appreciate it if you try and communicate with some basic Italian words/phrases. This does not apply to non-touristy neighborhoods, Napoli, Sicily or Sardegna-while people in these areas may know how to speak some English, they are way less likely to let you know they do.

My advice is going to YouTube and use either "Learn Italian with Lucrezia" or "Weila Tom" to learn some basic words and phrases. Both are free. I have spoken Italian my entire life (Dad was an immigrant, mom was first generation) and found these sites both to be very, very good.

Have a grea time

Isolation and submersion in the language forces one to learn it the fastest.

Most of what they're speaking in the Godfather is Sicilian, especially part 2.

I tried learning Mandarin thru a set of CD's and gave up. The first lesson was how to say, "I do not know how to speak English." Why in the world would I learn to say this in China???

First get a translator app on your phone
Learn the basics, hello, good morning, good Afternoon, good night, my name is, thank you, please, food items. When you speak these people will want to speak with you in English, if they know it.

Second, for someone who cannot understand you the app is priceless

I am a witness...

You kinda have to live surrounded by people speaking the language to learn it as fast as possible.

It takes more than 5 months to learn a new language for most people. You do have time though to learn some basics to get by. Rosetta Stone is a good program. Your local college may also offer or know someone who gives classes.
