Looking to pick up Spanish during quarantine. I do not expect to be fluent (I know real conversations are the only way to really pick up a language fully), but would like to hold my own / get out some sentences.

I've been doing some googling on different apps, programs, etc. on learning Spanish, and each new article seems like an ad for their product (saying why all the others are bad and not as good). So I thought, who better to ask then the TD folks.

Any recommendations? If it helps, I took 3 years of Spanish in New Orleans high school (one decade ago), which I remember very very sparse amounts of. I also took 4 years of latin during that time, which helps with root words, but couldn't write or translate latin now for much if anything.

I read somewhere that Duolingo sells the data they pick up from users? Is that true?

I can't recommend Duolingo highly enough. It's great and it's free. I can't speak to the data-selling issue.

You could go join these guys working on this house down the street... I dont think the Latin will help you there though.

I took Spanish in high school as well and was recently taking Spanish lessons from the Great Courses Plus for an upcoming trip. The course is led by Bill Worden, who is very competent. I can tell he does a good job from the introductory stuff.

I highly recommend it if you're willing to spend a little money on the online program.

Youtube Course Introduction

There's also the Duolingo app for everyday word practice.

I’m proficient, it’s funny though seeing the difference between Latin Americans who are always happy to speak Spanish with Americans vs Spaniards who are too proud to speak Spanish to you. When I visited Spain I tried to order in Spanish at a restaurant and the arrogant waitress blew it off and responded to me in English so I spoke in Ebonics the rest of the time to throw her for a loop.

Try watching some Netflix Spanish shows. Activate the subtitles and you can learn some things pretty quickly.

Coffee Break Spanish Podcast is pretty good. It’s short 10-15 minute lessons and you will learn pretty good conversation skills. I don’t like Duolingo if you mess up like 3 times you are done for the day. It inhibits your learning.

Duolingo is good for vocabulary.
As with any other romance language, the verb conjugations are the tricky part.
In french, the verbs end in either ir, er, re. Each one has it's own set of rules when conjugating. I'm sure spanish is the same way, but I don't know the verbs. My advice is to learn the rules, and drill the shite out of them, and supplement that with Duolingo for vocabulary.

Just a follow up. Rosetta Stone is offering 3 months free for "students" so sign up as a parent or for your imaginary kid. I can't say if it's good or not, but I can't hurt to try it.
