how exactly do you want to evaluate the students proficiency in a subject if you don’t test them?

Standardized tests have been proven to be about the best indicator of student knowledge and future student performance there is. I know a lot of teachers don't think it is fair to be judged on this (and perhaps there is some truth to that as it is difficult to improve natural IQ on a large scale so a teacher could get "screwed" with a lower IQ set of students although there are ways to account for that (but, fair warning, it would hurt some feelings)). However, we can't just have teachers subjectively evaluating their students as there is way too much variation in grading, favoritism, teacher self-interest, students fricking their teachers for grades (just kidding, maybe), etc in play there that is not objectively fair to the students which, in the end, is more important than what is "fair" to the teachers.

Worst part is that they test all morning, and then in the afternoon they have to go to their classes and do even more work... at least at my son's school they do

I really hope this is sarcasm.

you're an educator right? What would you think is a better way to evaluate the students?

I'm not picking a fight, just curious as to what we can do differently.

There are no better ways to evaluate American students other than standardized testing, in the current US education system.

We very much need to adjust public high schooling to APTITUDE testing/evaluation that filters students into 3 silos: Academia, Trade, or Military. A 4th could be SPED if you need to account for those students.

A real LEADER needs to revamp public education in this country into what it is intended to be. We need to tie welfare to education participation as well. If you waste the taxpayer's dime in school, then you don't qualify for full welfare benefits because you ARE NOT working to improve your situation.
You want to see a change in our country? Watch what happens after Month 1 when Welfare Royalty lose their precious benefits (or percent of them) due to their child's actions in public school.

Agreed, though for a slightly different reason. My son's schools have always obviously "taught towards the test" during the year, which is clearly besides the point of the test itself. This is just a blatant desire to help the school and ultimately the district score better when they rank each one. The tests should be an evaluation of what was learned during the year, not a way to see how well each school can prepare students to take the test in question.

My dad told me that he worked with a guy who had graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans and the guy could not write a complete comprehensible sentence with correct spelling.

Fixed, per my first point in my opinion on how to improve things.
