I remember being a wee lad in Death Valley watching LSU vs Idaho when all the older people were worried about Georges hitting in next few days.

I didn’t give a frick bc we were skull dragging Idaho that night but my parents had already packed our bags to leave for Memphis the next morning

I went to a high school jamboree game the Thursday before Katrina

got home from the game and my parents said "pack up, we're leaving in the morning"

Hurricane Georges in 98 was the first major threat to Louisiana since Andrew in 92 so people were really freaking out about it. There was Opal in 95 which was a monster but that beelined to Pensacola and Danny in 97 was that was a Cat 1 quick spin-up that only impacted extreme SE Louisiana. Georges looked good on satellite once it entered the Gulf through the Florida Straits and people thought it was on.

Georges was the storm that convinced my grandparents to move off of Lake Pontchartrain and get more inland

that move certainly paid off as their old place on Carr Dr. in Slidell was gone while their current house took in only an inch of water from Katrina

Georges was the one that Bob Breck got all butt hurt and mad because he was wrong and Nash Roberts was right. They dusted the old man off, showed up and nailed what it was gonna do.

Georges was the storm where I grew irritated with Margaret Orr

her forecasting completely spooked my great grandparents in the middle of the night so we got up from the hotel room inland in Slidell and drove like 7 hours to a hotel just outside of Memphis

Another useless Georges fact: forensic investigation after Katrina on the 17th Street Canal levee wall showed that it was actually weakened/damaged years earlier by hurricane Georges.

My Mom and Dad stayed on Grand Isle for Danny. Mom said never again. I think it blew around 90 or 100 or so. Their house was brand new and the air conditioner unit blew off of the platform. The contractor didn’t screw it down. Don’t know how the old man missed that.

South Shore? There was actually one left that I know of, which of course, Katrina finally did in.

Georges turned to the north before Irma made turning to the north cool.

in Georges the water got up to the doorstep of my grandparents house... but didn't get in

certainly messed up the run though

Even where I am at near Birmingham, I am becoming pretty concerned about flooding if Laura takes the path that NHC and the spaghetti models have it on now. Couple that with moisture it may pull in from TD 14 and it could be a major flooding threat in well inland into Alabama and up into the Appalachians.

Lots of model watching the next few days.

Georges did a ton of damage over in MS where it came ashore. We lost 63 of 72 pecan trees bc it rained for something like 10 days nonstop before Georges ever got here. then came ashore in Ocean Springs and got to about I10 and just stopped and sat there then took a hard east turn and went down the interstate. didnt seem like it was ever gonna stop blowing and raining. ground was soaked well before it got here and then the prolonged wind blew all the pecan trees over. Didnt break em off just pulled the roots up. topped most of them and stood em back up and they had just started producing a little again when Katrina finished em off.
