NEW ORLEANS, La. (WVUE) - As taxes begin to be filed for another year, the Internal Revenue Service is still trying to collect a hefty sum from New Orleans’ top-elected official.
Liens filed by the IRS show Mayor LaToya Cantrell and her husband, Jason, owe more than $95,000 in taxes. Federal tax liens have been placed on the couple for eight of the last nine tax years (2010-2015, 2017-2018).
The latest lien was filed on January 28 on the home owned by LaToya and Jason Cantrell. The IRS claims the married couple owes income taxes from 2018 totaling $19,406.99.

Certified Public Accountant Patrick Lynch said the next step for the federal government in collecting the total from the couple would come in either foreclosure on their home or bank accounts.
“That’s pretty much their discretion [how to collect the sum.]” Lynch said.
One month before the January 2020 filing, the IRS filed a separate lien on the Cantrell property for $31,940.33 in unpaid taxes from the 2017 tax year.

In 2018, the IRS filed another lien for unpaid taxes from the 2013, 2014 and 2015 tax years, totaling $43,664.48.

“The taxpayer is made aware well before a lien is filed,” Lynch said.
When Cantrell was running for mayor in 2017, The Lens first reported on another tax lien, filed in 2014 for $27,564.99 in unpaid taxes. The total accounts for unpaid income taxes from 2010, 2011 and 2012 tax years. Records show that lien has since been released.
“It’s a pattern,” Lynch said. “A pattern of not paying your taxes.”
When you put it all together the Cantrell’s owe $95,011 in unpaid taxes.
Lynch said if the mayor and her husband are both named it indicates they filed a joint/married tax return, meaning both are responsible for the unpaid taxes.

I was a fan of hers early on. First mayor to give the Firefighters a raise since Katrina (14 years ), and that was a city wide (10%) cost of living raise. Which other departments, like the incompetent S&WB, had been receiving prior. She promised an additional 15% to Fire, because an outside company, hired by the firefighter’s union, outlined NOFD as being 43% below the police department. Nationally, Fire departments are on average 12% below their city police.
New Orleans Fire has been typically neglected and overworked.
In 2010 there were 27,000 total calls.
2019 produced a record 65,000 calls. Compared to Jefferson Parish 6,000 calls and a 35% higher salary.
Louisiana is the 2nd lowest paying firefighter position in the country. New Orleans being the 3rd highest in the state, but most visited city in the world, and for years NOFD & NOEMS have combined for the most
Revives (saved lives) in the country.
Why the dedicated men and women of New Orleans continue to get shite on, is beyond us.
On average a busy engine house makes 15-20 medical calls per 24hours. On top of fires, accidents, elevators, false alarms, and everything and anything else.
Latoya hasn’t returned our union’s phone calls in 8 months. She hasn’t been good on her pay raise promise. Our contract, which protects promotions, transfers, probational firefighters, hiring etc still hasn’t been signed since she’s been in office.
Meanwhile every agency on site 24/7 at the hotel collapse is getting federal funding, and being paid detail hourly money, except firefighters. Every 4 hours since the collapse a fire company has been dispatched to sit and babysit this clusterfrick. On duty, but out of service. That means different neighborhoods are missing an entire company for 4 hours. But your tax dollars are still paying for that company while they’re out of service.
So of course on thanksgiving a woman dies in a fire in an uptown area, near a fire house, but the company was doing their 4 hour stint at the collapse.
Next time you see the guys who work on the streets let them know you’re with them. Trust me, we cant express ourselves openly but we think exactly the way you do, but we’re still out here sacrificing for you, the tax payer, the citizen, the tourist, the property owner.
