Does a declaration of war give the Russian government the ability to basically start a draft? Putin is living 40+ years in the past and he can’t let it go IMO because he longs for the days of the past.

Good twitter thread on the prospect of Russian mobilization. TL;DR, Russia doesn't have the infastricture and cadre to train a mass levy and doesn't have any way to equip them. LINK

I wonder how many women it would take to move him..... equality and all that..

They have a draft, of which 38% have bothered to show up for the spring call up.

Arguably the most humiliating loss (and there have been many humiliations) of this war for RU happened this week. The scrapping of the fake referendums on independence for the occupied regions in the Donbas. The Russians realized there was essentially zero support among the “liberated” the notion 1 million have been deported against their will to Russia is a war crime. Ukrainians have had a much better 36 hrs. BTW I was told contrary to my angry missive against MSNBC for tipping the hand of Allied nations about weapons, intelligence apparently media like WSJ and CNN and Fox aren’t reporting stuff until after the fact ie after deliveries are made or mostly made. I’ve been reassured by this, probably should have clued to the idea I was just hearing stuff a few hours before reportage came out.

In WW1, Imperial Russia sent men into battle without guns. Soldiers were told to pick up weapons when their comrades fell.

Better than total human wave in Korean War where Chinese were told to wave sticks or their arms in the air to draw fire until somebody in the back popped up with a gun.

Did you see my question from a few pages back? I was wondering what you meant by 100k being the ‘magic number’.

This doesn’t feel like good news on the whole. Sure they’ve vastly underperformed, but this gives them more men to throw at the problem, even if just literally. Does this also further open the door for potential official help from what Allie’s they have left? Potentially, does this also move a Romania or Poland to more directly join the fray?
I’m certain this also means many more tens of billions in western equipment to Ukraine.

No. Russia has made it crystal clear what that would trigger. Ukraine isn’t NATO, and Romania and Poland don’t want none of that smoke.
The only way any other country will become directly involved is if NATO signatories are attacked.

If Transnistria turns hot, I think Romania is going to be seriously calculating their physical involvement. Moldova May even outright ask them for help. Then what?

It might be a dumb idea know but it makes for good writing in science fiction books.

Russia won’t be expanding outside of Ukraine.
It’s a non-starter; because, again: No one will risk involvement unless a NATO signatory is directly attacked.

Interesting thread on the state of the war, and discussion on the impact of the Russian blockade in the Ukraine economy both currently and in the future.
Thesis: with only rail available Ukraine is limited to 10% of its export capacity. While Ukraine can have success on the ground, as of now they can’t threaten the Black Sea fleet in its entirely.

That is pretty good for Russia. Of course Russia is also the ones putting out the stats so its probably 3.8%.

Guys bad news. The ghost of Kyiv has been killed in combat. Good news is he destroyed 79 Russian aircraft before Ivan finally got him.

The question is is this some kind of sabotage campaign or is it just typical slapdick Russian industrial accidents that we don't ordinarily notice?
